I keep a pretty close watch on the hunting status in Botswana via my friend Gerhard Koch of Koch Safaris and in Namibia via my friend Jan du Plessis of Sebrahunt Safaris.

The worst part of this entire WuFlu lock for Botswana is it came just after the first elephant tenders were auctioned. Some outfitters had elephant hunts "sold" within hours of winning the tenders but clients had to back out due to the world-wide lock downs.

Per the info I've gotten from Gerhard, the tender winners were able to convince the MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION AND TOURISM, The Honorable Philda Kereng to extend all game hunting seasons, both PG and DG hunts in the tenders to the end of December 2020 and is willing to consider extending again, if needed to the end of Feb 2021.

All of the elephant tenders were sold within hours. Much of the deposits taken have already been spent putting camps together and getting ready for the season. Extending the hunting season by a few months will not salvage the financial ruin that many operators find themselves in and that's assuming some of the hunters will keep their bookings.

This is a train wreck for a lot of folks. Let's hope the guys can salvage what's left of the season. One thing is for sure, it you are looking for an elephant hunt in 2020, bargains will be had.

There were two different auctions auctioned a few weeks apart. Each auction had maybe half a dozen individual concession blocks around the country. Each black had it's own quota of ele and some included some buff and leopard and a few head of PG. Each of these concessions were then individually sold to highest bidders.

Your right, they all sold within MINUTES and a lot of the winning bidders had client's already lined up IF they won a concession.

One upside to this delay is USF&W is still sorting out the import stuff for BOTs.

I do know that Gerhard and Jaco are working up some pretty good prices for when this breaks open.
