Lechwe: Let's see 'em
Since the first time I mounted one for a client years ago, I've always wanted a Red Lechwe. For that matter any of the Lechwe family. I never understood why they were called "Red" Lechwe but I suppose it's due to their golden-copper fur when it shimmers in the Sun. But Red it was to be for my first Lechwe hunt. Having glassed a number of them in the morning, I was introduced to the "Lechwe sneak," a unique escape posture that Lechwe use to mesmerize their predators long enough for them to find cover between themselves and danger. Then it's "kick in the after burners...good-bye!" After being side tracked by a great Impala, I returned to hunting Lechwe. We had bumped several by spooking Eland. The Eland were extremely cautious and once they take off, everybody in the immediate area knows to get out of Dodge. I finally spotted this ram at 450 yards bedded down on a ridge top. Was able to sneak within 220 or so yards and put the hammer down. One shot into his shoulder did the job. Again my favorite: .280 with 160 gr Accubond.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Thanks; you should do well there. I would like to get the Kafue and Black someday. Doubt I will ever get the Nile, but who knows. Good hunting in Bots, LDK

Hiya all,

Is the red lechwe the same as the chobe lechwe? I was taking to someone the other day that hhadn't heard of the Red, but had hunted the Chobe Lechwe.

I dunno if we had our wires crossed.

These were taken in Botswana:

On the third picture, my son first shot the lechewe which ran behind some trees. While they were manuvering for a follow up on the lechewe the tracker saw the kudu. Jon shot the kudu, than the lechewe bolted and he shot it again. By then the kudu was getting back up so Jon hit him again and then finished off the lechewe. How about a double for your fist African trophy?

There are five species listed as admittable by SCI: Kafue, Red, Black, Nile and Common. The common Lechwe are those listed as "non-indigenous" or introduced. It is very possible the Chobe Lechwe is a common or a subspecies of the Red. The Red's scientific name is: Kobus Leche, so it is possible Kobus has been changed into "Chobe" by local slang. I haven't heard Chobe Lechwe before. There are Chobe Bushbuck. You can also consult Roward Ward records. They may shed light on the subject. Good hunting, LDK
