I was just wondering, or rather thinking out aloud as to what (if anything) our good hunter friends can do to help the Zimbabwe situation !!! WE all know that most Politicians including some in the UK Europe and USA in particular dont give a sh.t, the reason I mention those countries is because they have embassies or representation in Zim's and ARE in POSITION to make change, all they need is some will and some guts, but alas the silence or inaction is deafining .. We all know the wonderful country Zimbabwe is to hunt in and HUNTERS generally dont get involved in Politics per se and dont boycott, and that is the last thing I would expect them do do .. BUT what I am saying IS there anything that Hunters whom visit Zimbabwe can do to help get rid of MUGABE .... Surely when you visit you can get the feel of the problem and talking to your outfitters you will get a good read on the situation With all the combined brain power of our esteemed AR guests, what CONSTRUCTIVE ideas are there to help the situation and get rid of MUGABE Regards, Peter

Personally, I think the only thing that anyone can do is to let the situation in Zimbabwe run its course. The government there is too corrupt and too powerful for any small political or economic efforts to have any effect. Short of invading Zim and ousting Mugabe, I don't think there is anything that will dislodge him and his party from power. And sadly, too many of his "black brother" politicos in other African countries stand by him. Just my two cents worth.... -Bob F.

BobF Ain't that the truth! All our leaders have that streak of bleedingheart liberalism in their system and can't do anything about the situation there anyway. They should've left Rhodesia alone! Lo do they call to me, They bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla, Where the brave may live forever.

I've always thought that the long range solution for Mugabe was either a 7.62 or .338. I'm surprised it hasn't been done already. But in all seriousness he can't live that much longer. Nature will take it's course and time will tell. Unfortrunatley their is no political or economic upside in an armed or even political conflict with Mugabe. At least not in the classic sense. The fine people of Zimbabwe deserve better and my heart goes out to them. I wish I had a simple answer that was realistic.

Balla,Balla, I beleive the solution to the problem lies within the African continent and not from some nation across the seas or a bunch of do-gooder hunter types . It is up to nations locally that may have some sway with Zim in order to make corrections. Why did the nations of southern/eastern Africa stand still and watch the Zim government abuse its citizens? If US or UK went into Zim, it would be a big mistake and create further hatred of the USA in the eyes of many. Why do people do what they do?, because they can get away with it with no chance of reprisal from neighbor nations. I don't mean to make a political statement or cause trouble, but it does bother me that economically secure nations of southern and eastern Africa stood still and did very little to help their neighbors. If I am wrong here please correct me. I do recognize Zambia as helping some, who openly recieved the farmers who were thrown off their lands. We must help our bothers when they are in need, regardless of their color or religous beliefs when they are being wronged. Evenually, the countrys of the African continent must help each other or these things will continue to happen in Africa, as they have been for eons. Sorry to get on a soapbox, of course this is just my opinion, and I could be well off base. I have written my US senators and congresmen. They did respond with a general letter appluading the miniscule sanctions against Big Dadda Bannana. Like he gives a $hit! I then sent another letter, and I explained to them , is, that the Good Old USA helped put Mugabe in power, via support of appartied. Well the analogy I used was that we placed a minority, marxist goverment to power. In a sense we let the native population have the land back. So if we (the USA) supported him and his henchmen by giving land back that was homesteaded by white pioneers, shouldn't we then give all of it back to our Native Americans here in the USA???? They never responded to that letter!!!! Andrew Young (jimmy Carter era) was a supporter of the Marxist rebel mugabe, I really feel Andrew should maybe return to his homeland and help mugabe rebuild!

Peter- Right now the only thing preserving the game is that cash funnel to members of the goverment. It may be a good thing that no one from the ouitside gives a damn. Interrupt that chain of cash and how long would the wildlife resource last? If there is not some "orderly" change when he goes we may kiss it goodbye. It will take a MASSIVE aid effort to keep them off bush protein. At the last "summit" there was serious lip service given to the notion that aid had to be "transparent" in it's path to those releived. With him and his still there, that's not going to happen.

Kudu I applaud you for your action, you are someone whom backs up thoughts with deeds ... Aint it wonderful how those in POWER ( even your tough USA govenment ) seem to be silenced when you a CITIZEN exposes some home truths, they run and duck for cover when the questions become difficult .... All over the world, here in NZ whre I live, in USA, in Europe, In Africa, they are clam up when someone asks the difficult questions .... Thanks again for the help you offered Regards, Peter

Thank you Peter for the kind words. Of all the places I have visited and hunted, Zimbabwe holds a special place in my heart. I loved the land, and most of the people. I would love to live there, I actually looked at realestate at one time. I am not a wealthy man by any means, I work lots of overtime at a trade to earn enough money to hunt, the three trips there will be with me always. When I was younger I followed the Rhodesian war and politics with earnest. My heart goes out to you and those that were forced from thier homeland. If only the world had minded thier own business! One of the biggest problems with Zimbabwe is the fact that news reporters are not allowed in the country. Now if we could get Oprah, Jacko and Jesse Jackson to go over for for any reason maybee just maybee folks other then hunters could see what is going on.I remember on one trip to R.S.A. the plane was jammed packed with kids going to Zim for missionary work.It was right before the election and I could not believe people sending their kids over at that time.Looking back most of those people probly had no idea what was going on at that time, just as they do not have a clue today. Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war; That this foul deed shall smell above the earth With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Gentlemen: On this evening's NBC news broadcast there was a Brit reporting from Zimbabwe. They were showing how it actually is. I was amazed to see this on our liberal news cast. Maybe it was because Campbell Brown was on tonight instead of Brian Williams. JD

Hi JD Good to see you on AR from time to time, hope life in the USA and ND is going well ///// Do you have any pics of any of your finished mounts at all from your trip/s to the land of Africa, sure would like to see them sometime ... Man life is getting tougher by the day for the hunting operators in these developing countries, my family have daily hassles just to keep ahead of the changes, red tape, corruption, and PC crap going on over there, but when one sees the wonderful sunsets, the night fires and the sounds of the WILD it makes a tough existance just that little bit easier Regards to yourself and the family Peter

Many or most of the Black African leaders support Mugabe publicly and decry the West for its racism and colonial attitude. We know the black leaders are really only taking a self interested posture and also a black racist attitude as they consider anything to do with ousting whities from Africa is acceptable. The MONEYBROKERS of the Western World the G8 promise to forgive a great deal of the African Dictators national debts. In reality rewarding them for mismanagement of their economies, attrocities against their own people and specific minorites, oppression of any political opposition, perhaps even mass murdering sprees. Why would any African Dictator even consider changing his ways? *** As for ideas I have none, except take along an extra .308 or .223 with you on your next safari as a "back up" rifle and maybe leave its ammo behind. The G8 conclusion was to first, forgive some debt, and second to make sure any aid from G8 nations will be "transparent". What is really transparent is that they don't care and will not act untill there is a massive problem. For a good read on the aid situation, Theroux's Black Star Safari is a good read.

Balla Balla, An idea: Instead of trying to talk to government officials, we should appeal to Oprah Winfrey to do a show episode on Zimbabwe. If whites or American / British officials speak out against Mugabe it would be brushed off as rascist regimes bashing a nobel african leader. If however, Oprah got after Bob it would be pretty powerful. Question is how to inspire her to take up the cause. She seems to have a pretty good grip on just causes. Some of you computer literate types need to put together a well thought out "unbiased" e-mail addressing the ZIm situation and send it to her. Hugh

I like the Oprah idea. We should send an e-mail to her production company suggesting a show on ZImbabwe / Mugabe. Oprah seems to have a fair grip on what is right and what is wrong. Turn the power of Hollywood on a decent mission for a change. If Oprah fimed an expose on Mugabe's abuses you would see the situation taking on a higher degree of importance with NATO and the world press. As long as Bush is tangled up in the Middle East, I doubt you will see the US taking on any policing actions. This might just be a job for the French!!!

I say if they don't get releif money from outside Africa, they will go down hill fast. Debt releif only makes the problem worse as they get to start over with new loans and corruption. If we send anything we should send tangible products. Grain and other food stuffs. At least they would have to sell the items to convert to cash rather than taking bank notes or credit monies for their own I say if they don't get relief money from outside Africa, they will go down hill fast.
