Ladies and Gentlemen, It is easy to look at pictures on the internet when someone else has placed a target on the vitals. Here is something completely different. Those are wonderful pics you have there...I will take numbers 3, 6 and 8 in that order. One more reason I have GOT to make my way to SA. At the last Dallas SCI I heard Craig Boddington say that if Cape Buff are quatering away or to you then you draw an immaginary line between his front legs moving up to just below center of the chest. I've never hunted buffalo, but, in most cases, I opted for taking out the far shoulder. Thanks Terry, I'm about 43 days away from leaving for the Caprivi and my first buff hunt so all the buff pictures are handy to have right now. "There always seems to be a big market for making the clear, complex." | |||

It dont even have to be running around...Sit in the landcruiser for 8 hours being jossled over boulders all day,hanging on to a twelve pound gun. Then in a hurry try to get out and place a 220 meter shot without sticks..When you've been hanging on for dear life that long,your arms are limp noodles | |||

I just wish I could see more than a big, black blur in the bush... I've seen and tried to glass several thousand buffalo, I reckon, but I can count the times on one hand that I had "full-body" views like the pictures... We've all been there. You can see a great set of horns, but which way is the rest of his body pointed... and while you're trying to figure it out... off they go in a "heated rush"... JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous. | |||

For most of these shots a simple formula works. I've read it, practiced it, but sometimes have forgotten it in the heat of things (on deer not buffs - this will obviously have to wait until I actually make it to Africa). Align the vertical crosshair with the most rearward placed front leg and hold the horizontal crosshair one-quarter to one-third of the body depth up from the bottom of the chest cavity. Bang. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while. | |||

How about just shooting them in the shoulder and go take pictures... Too much is made of this IMO...I have seen people screw around until an animal leaves because the are trying to decide the exact spot to shoot a buffalo, well thats an awfully big target to worry about within reason...If you miss the heart, you can get both lungs (they are pretty darn big), spine or the short ribs in the neck, that gives one about 3 feet of bullseye...On a rare ocassion one might stick a bullet between the spine and the top of the lungs and that can be a bad shot, but follow up shots will take care of that most of the time... In the end, I got to understand WHY to shoot them IN the shoulder (rather than behind the shoulder), at least in broadside shots! Dan | |||
