SB1175, The Iconic African Species Protection Act...
California Senate Bill 1175, the terrible legislation which would ban the importation into California of many species of African game trophies, DIED LAST NIGHT!

California’s legislative session ended at midnight, August 31 (7 hours ago) and the bill failed to make it through both houses of our legislature before the deadline passed. We’ve gotten a reprieve... for now.

There was a group of moderate Democrats who opposed the bill, and while they weren’t able to kill it, they did manage to slow it down and make amendments which required it to go back to the Senate for a final vote. With all the higher priority legislation that had to be passed before the midnight deadline, it simply got caught up in heavy traffic and time ran out on the legislative session before the author could gain final approval to send it to the Governor.

This bill likely would have passed given more time, and we are sure that the Governor would have signed it into law. We expect the author to likely introduce it again next year, so this victory is likely temporary. Everyone who stood in opposition will need to remain vigilant and strongly oppose this bill if and when it is introduced in a future legislative session. There was a large coalition that opposed this bill, including officials from half a dozen African countries. The Democrats in our legislature ignored all the opposition and the bill advanced through every committee in both houses on nearly straight party line votes. IIRC, there wasn’t a single Republican AYE vote at any stage. There were only a few Democrat NO votes, and Except for the Assembly moderate Democrats on the floor vote, they were only made after Passage at each stage was assured.

We’ve got a reprieve for now, but need to proactively work to make sure this bill doesn’t pass in a future legislative session.

Finally some good news out of California. But it should never have been considered in the first place.

Correct, it never should have been. BUT, this bill has been introduced twice in the last three sessions, and the author is an anti-hunter.

We expect him to introduce the bill again in a future legislative session. This needs to be fought proactively once the next legislative session begins and we know who the new group of politicians will be.

Some please explain to me.

What good would such a legislation do to people in California??

Aren’t laws supposed to improve the lives of citizens??

Activism isn't about helping people - it is about forcing your will and ideologies on someone else.

Saeed, it has nothing to do with improving the lives of California residents. It has everything to do with serving the misguided interests of anti-hunters, who are a constituency of the bill’s author. He is simply serving a narrow group of supporters who think like he does. California’s legislature does many things that only serve the interests of their direct supporters, to the detriment of the population at-large. If I went through some of the bills that were included in this last legislative session, you’d think our politicians had declared war on many Californians. Much of what they proposed was to harm groups whom their supporters were on opposite sides of issues.

Good news for now. I heard that it had passed in the Assembly, but had not heard that it had timed out. This bill was far more expansive than the previous one that the governor vetoed, as it banned the import of live animals as well. It also claimed that it was necessary because of the potential for "zootic transfer" of Covid-19. Given the tyrannical mindset of the governor, I believe that he would have signed it, even though it violated both the supremacy and interstate commerce clauses of the Constitution. And, of course, there is the fact that only a complete idiot or ideologue would claim that Covid-19 came via zootic transfer from animals!

That is not a concern for CA. I can not legally hunt a mountain lion in NM for example and then bring the trophy back to CA as it is a felony. I think SCI did try to sue on those grounds and lost some years past.

Idiots ran out of time. Too busy passing other stupid laws to pass this one that’s even stupider.

No free man is safe while the legislature is in session.

About 99.9% of hunters and shooters are Republicans. The purpose of such bills is to hurt Republicans. Of course, the reason that 99.9% of them are Republicans is because the Democrats have been attacking us for 50 years.

They've tried to outlaw handguns (Saturday night specials), Solid bullets (cop-killing bullets), expanding bullets (dum dum bullets), bear hunting, and cougar hunting.

Hard to believe that when I lived in what is now the Peoples' Republik of Kalifornia Ronald Reagan was governor. Thank God I escaped.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Did you even read the OP?

Spot on! As it turns out this philosophy is also the driving force for the left leaning Liberal type parties. If they disagree with something they are not happy until they have created a bunch of laws/regulations that prohibit anyone from doing it.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
