So has any one used the Barnes banded solids,,,,,How well do they work ????

Here are some stats from three recovered Woodleigh SP's.

570 grain @ ~2150fps
Max expanded diameter= 1.58"
Retained Weight= 523.8 grains (although there is still a small bit of sinew/etc that I haven't been able to remove from the bullet)
Comments- Warthog, going away shot in the butt at <5 yards

Comments- Cape Buffalo, shoulder shot @ roughly 50 yards.

Softs were not exiting on broadside, behind the shoulder shots (Testing on down animal) or shoulder shots on buffalo.


Tried to take some pictures but they wouldn't come out right with the cheap camera I have on hand.

All solids that were recovered performed very well and could have been loaded and fired again.

My experience With large caliber Woodleigh softs is that I find them great providing you keep the velocity between 2100fps and 2450fps.
I have seen problems with the 300grn 375 soft and solids when used at unnecessary high velocity.

Not on elephant but I know Woodleigh already does this internally on buffalo for their own QC purposes.

And at various times there is no shortage of buffalo culls for testing bullets. We are talking about statistically significant numbers.

Whether it is publically available though I don't know.

Elephant aren't relevant to this thread as solids of FMJs are used on elephant, whereas the originator of this thread was specifically asking about SPs. Still interesting of course though there was only a FMJ ele penetration thread a week or two ago.

I'm running woodleigh .375's 350 softs and fmj's at 2450... Am I in the ballpark or should I back off just a wee bit?

A velocity of 2,450 in the 375 H&H sounds a tad high but I really don't know what the pressure would be. I can say that any velocity over 2,300 should work well with the 375, 350 grain Woodleigh. I suspect you will get equal if not greater penetration at 2,300 than 2,450. The bullet will open a little less which should increase penetration.

The pressure is about as high as I want to get... Shot them over the summer, temp in the 90's and high humidity and had 0 problems...
They run around 2440/2450 in a 25"brl..
