Python crushes Kwekwe boy Midlands Reporter April 29, 2010 A NINE year-old Kwekwe boy died after being crushed by a python while herding cattle in the company of his friends, police confirmed. Police identified the now deceased as Ndodana Dladla of Grasslands Farm in Kwekwe. Midlands Province police spokesperson, Inspector Patrick Chademana said the boy was herding cattle near Njomani River with two other boys of his age who were from the same farm when the tragedy struck at about 3.30pm on Friday. "On the fateful day, the three boys were herding cattle at Plot 149, Grasslands Farm in Kwekwe. The three boys came across a stationary and attractive looking python. “The other two boys ran away but Dladla remained rooted at the spot, glancing at the python,” said Insp Chademana. He said the two boys who fled from the scene went and reported the matter to their father, Mr Njalo Zimba, who rushed to the scene and found the snake curling around the now deceased boy's body. Mr Zimba found the boy already dead. Insp Chademana said Mr Zimba struck the python with a wooden pole forcing it to release the body. "The python estimated to be between four and five metres long disappeared into the bush," he said. Meanwhile, police in Kwekwe picked up the body of a man who was found dead near a fallen live power line belonging to Zesa near Dutchman's pool. Insp Chademana said the deceased man whose age is estimated to be between 25-30 years is suspected to have died while trying to cross the live Zesa wires. “The deceased man was discovered by a motorist who was fetching firewood. The motorist discovered that his path had been blocked by the fallen Zesa lines from the Kwekwe North feeder and started searching for a way through. “The motorist drove his truck following the fallen power line that stretched across Northwest of Dutchman's Pool sewage treatment plant in which he found the deceased. “He discovered the deceased man lying on top of the fallen Zesa cables. The deceased man's body was severely burnt,” he said. Insp Chademana said the unidentified deceased man could have been electrocuted on the night of Thursday or early Friday morning. “The deceased has not yet been identified and his relatives are thus unknown at the moment. The incident was reported to the police at Mbizo and the scene was attended by both the police and Zesa engineers. The deceased's body was taken to Kwekwe Hospital mortuary,” he said. Oh i thot two people were reported dead in this thread, no no pls go on about the poachers wire and the black mamba. obviously the ability to type is not reserved for the sensible or those with good judgement, and obviously the phrase 'idiots with guns' is not just catch phrase for tree huggers. I never knew that any kind of crushing snakes existed in Africa that could kill a human of any particualr size. It happens that I have travelled in the Central and South American tropics -and always paid close attention to snakes in the bush-and, frnakly, this story puzzles me. I am an ignoramous about this so I defer to the experts - but could this child have been taken by a big poisonous snake - like a mamba? Just asking.

The poacher's wire or copper theft crossed my mind. That is all to frequently how the wires get down to start with. DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Python sebae is quite an effective predator fromm all the anecdotal eveidence i have come across, the black mamba was just a reference in jest.National gegraphic once did a really interesting story of pythons in Cameroun and how the natives captured them for food. To hunt, fish and tell only the truth.

This behavior is high unusual for a rock python, and if it was in its "feeding frenzy" it would be very hard to get it to just slither away into the bush. There has to be more to this story.
