We have escaped the challenge we most feared........at least for the next 2 or so years! There has been no proposal submitted at the next CoP15 meeting for the uplisting of lion. Below form CF bulletin: The CITES proposals have been published. 1. There is no proposal for the African lion! 2. There are proposals to downlist the elephant for trophy hunting purposes in Zambia and in Tanzania so that import permits will no longer be required from the USF&WS. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. From what the Niassa Reserve people had to say, that's pretty amazing. Sounded like a done deal.

Just the same I hope people won't lose focus on the importance of reforming the current state of lion hunting!!! Brett DRSS Life Member SCI Life Member NRA Life Member WSF Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick. And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too. May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep. May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip. -Seth Peterson

Is this a good thing or a bad thing???? We have the knack of intervening when it seems a lost cause.

At the risk of sounding like a smug git...... I told ya so! More seriously, as I said a few weeks ago, I just couldn't see it happening. It's not the first time (and probably not the last time) the same countries & organisations etc have rumbled about how they were gonna try for an upgrade and have then had a change of heart....... or at least, a loss of bottle. Either way, let's be grateful and hope we as hunters can try to be more selective in our choice of what Lions we take so that the population and trophy quality improves.
