A suspected poacher was shot and seriously injured at Doddieburn Ranch near Gwanda on Tuesday morning.
Police said yesterday the man was shot at around 5am by an unknown assailant.
Matabeleland South police spokesman Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said the man was in the company of two other men when he was shot.
"The victim and his two friends had strayed into the ranch intending to poach wildlife with the assistance of dogs.
"While in the farm, they heard a gunshot and when they tried to investigate, the suspected poacher was shot in the ribs and collapsed," said Insp Dzirutwe.
He said his colleagues fled, leaving him unconscious.
Insp Dzirutwe said the man later regained consciousness and staggered to a nearby village where he sought help.
Police were informed about the incident and the man was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for treatment.
His condition is reported to be critical.
Insp Dzirutwe said investigations are still underway.

Use Enough GunAssailant? By the way, is that any civilized way to treat a poacher who has merely strayed onto your ranch with dogs?

The poacher-dog issue is a very serious one down there in the Lowveldt. When I was there in June of 05, my PH John Sharp devoted a LOT of time & resources trying to nab those bastasrds. They come with the moon is up and they try to go for leopards the crazy bastards. John and the Malangani Conservancy Foreman and his scouts had a pretty good system of catching them and killing their dogs. BUT, they had to be very careful not to hurt the poachers as the authorities didn't take kindly to white guys beating up on the locals, but man they sure were clumsy and fell down a lot and thus accumulated a lot of dents and scratches

That is the main (optimum method) with the black chap poachers ... (they use dogs)
We have similar occurances quite often at our ranch in South Africa ...
BUT the (main differance really) is with these black guys we dont take out (the poachers) .... WE more often than not shoot their DOGS as the poachers (run like the wind) and leave their dogs on the property ...
With the (white chap poachers) they tend to always use (high powered rifles) when they poach, so that is a very dangerious thing and we NORMALLY of course dont confront them

L. David KeithRecently I was in Gwanda, and if not mistaken, on this very ranch. It was a "resettlement" ranch, so no sport hunted trophies can be imported into the US. It was pumped up with game but I suspect that poaching will drain it's resources soon. There were guards on the property. All of 17-18 years old. We brought them scud and mealimeal. I was told the area held Lions but I do not know for sure. I do know they stayed inside the compound and never ventured out at night. It was pitch black the night I was there. The stars were a sight to see. LDK

ozhunterHunted Doddieburn a few years ago.
It was nice country but would of had great hunting years ago.
Sadly its the same as most communal areas now.
