I will be taking my father to So. Africa next year. He has seen my mounts and would like to hunt Kudu and Warthog.

What areas would you recommend for a hunt with best chance at good trophy quality for these two species?

Recommended outfitters that will provide a good Africa experience instead of "hurry and shoot something representative" (like my first So. Africa) experience?

My last hunt was in Zimbabwe, but he isn't too keen on traveling there.

Thanks!
Mike

Welcome to the forum!

No end of good areas for those species but you might like to try Andrew McLaren, Luan, Jaco Human or 375Fanatic, all who post here. Luan's area produces especially big kudu but he doesn't allow many to be hunted so you might have to book early if you want one.

375fanatic is having internet problems just now, so if you need to contact him feel free to send me an email and I'll pass it onto him as he only lives a few miles from me.

MPV,

Come hunt with us at Settlers Safaris, based in the Eastern Cape, S.A. We offer the Eastern Cape kudu, it is slightly smaller than the Southern greaters found in Zim and Nam, but just as beautiful, especially May month during the rut when they have dark distinct markings and swollen necks. As for warthogs, we have lots of them. to find a really good one though will take a bit of looking. Ask tracker 49, a member of this forum, he posted a hunt report on here about 4 months ago, he got a nice hog whose tusks measured about 13 inches with me. Check out my website at www.settlerssafaris.com and send me a PM if you would like more info and a quote.

Regards

Murray

No mentioning of your firends (spelling mistake on purpose) here at Infinito Stevo ya ol geysa?

Remember, although I consider Rudi a friend, he is not an outfitter, yet, and as such cannot book a hunt.

MPV, many of the folks here on AR have booked a good quality hunt, at very affordable prices with us in the past and for next year. You are welcome to join the clan! I will be in Reno (booth 4001) and Dallas (booth 10 by the food court) for the shows in January.

Drop me a line, and we will work out a hunt in SA the way it should be!

Charl,

Oops, I forgot to mention you as an option...... sorry about that mate. - It wasn't deliberate!

You're right, Rudi isn't an outfitter but he could perfectly legitimately work through any one of umpteen outfitters.

I would look into the Limpopo Province of SA. I have hunted there several times and have taken several nice warthogs, even one that went 15 inches. Seen several nice kudu in the mid 50 range. Even chased a 60 inch kudu this year but was unable to get a shot. My outfitter was Scott Van Zyl with SS Pro Safaris.

Good Hunting,

As a rule of thumb big warthog appear when and where you find 'em but anywhere with good food and soft/sandy soil should produce good 'uns. Populations also rise and fall dramatically dependent on what rainfall the area has had in recent years because in very heavy rains, it's not at all uncommon for the young to drown in high numbers and consequently, there's a dearth of pigs in that area for a while.

If you want really BIG kudu and waterbuck in SA, I'd suggest Luan's place as one of the very best options and if you want to go a bit further afield, I'd look at Tuli Block Botswana as another good option..... but probably not quite as good as Luan's.

I saw a nice, upper 50's (field judged at @ 58") kudu with Charl with Infinito this year. It was not on my list, but if I'd had a good shot, I would have broken out the credit card. He was in a group of 3, the smallest was estimated at 50". He stayed in the thickest stuff and let the smaller bulls take the exposed route.

I saw the small one first, and thought "Yeah, that's a kudu". The second one I thought "Now I see why people hunt kudu". Then I saw the big one, and all I could think was "Is there a round loaded???!!!"

I had almost no interest in kudu until I saw that monster.

Good luck on your search!

DOJ - Thanks for the reference ! MPV - in my opinion - the best Warthog and Kudu come out of the Limpopo Valley arera of SA. If you are looking for good trophies and the oppurtunity to hunt plainsgame on a large (75 000 acre conservancy) and amongst big game such as buffalo, elephant, rhino etc PM me and we can talk !

Luan's has got very nice Kudu. We operate just on the other side of the mountain from him. Lydenburg (the local town) is known to produce the biggest Kudu out of South Africa every year. Not a lot of SA PH's can argue about that if they are worth their salt. Warthog is as Steve says, they are where you find them, and we have our fair share every year Sir. Good luck with your hunt for the right place, and we are more than happy to qoute you if you wish!

Mike:

Having had our expectations exceeded on both the safaris my wife and I took with Mark DeWet, I just wanted to build on what DOJ has said and encourage you to talk with him. Mark delivers a bespoke 'classic' safari in a totally professional and congenial manner.

Mark has decades of experience and is great fun to be with - and he delivers on everything he promises. We can't wait to hunt with him again. Check out his website: www.markdewetsafaris.com

Below you'll find a few photos from our most recent safari that include Mark. In the one with the warthog, you'll see Mark contorting himself to get that perfect photo. He'll go to hilarious contortions to achieve that one perfect photo.

Here's Mark getting a shot of my second dagga boy taken with him in two years.

Nice photo, Mark!

Mark low-crawling to document my first warthog

Mark encouraged my wife Claudia to try her hand at plainsgame hunting leading to this great zebra stallion complete with lion scars

Claudia's first African trophy - thanks to Mark's patience and tutelage

At our spike camp, as elsewhere, Mark wanted to be sure that we left with great memories of our Matetsi safari

Claudia and Mark overlooking the river that separates Matetsi Unit 4 and the Hwange National Park - the location of our spike camp

Our happy band as we negotiate a 'secret' game-rich canyon

Our next safari with Mark will include a kudu for me and a warthog for Claudia. Mark is particularly clever at locating kudu - as he has shown us on many occasions. He's a South African, and while Mark operates safaris throughout southern Africa, he knows where the big one's can be found in his home country. We can't wait!

In reference to Murray's reply above (Settlers Safari), see my hunt report "Back from RSA, Kubusi Safari's" for pictures of the animals I hunted. My favorites are the Kudu and Warthog.
Like Murray said the Eastern Cape Kudu may not have the inches of a Greater Kudu, but are still a great hunt and trophy. Murray knows how to find them.
Like I always say, it's not the mount on the wall, it's the memories behind it.

I sent MVP an PM but if anyone else is interested in a kudu warthog combo I can't imagine there is a better spot than Coutada 9 in Mozambique. You should expect a kudu of 53"-56" and a warthog of 13" plus on a late season booking. Personally I shot a 57"+ kudu and picked up a 15.5"x16.5" warthog there. Clients have shot 60"+ kudu there and this last October I had a client shoot a 16" warthog after turning down numerous 13"-14" pigs. Do a search on Mokore Safaris and you'll find the full details on this hunt in the Offered and Discounted Hunt forum.

There are many good places to hunt for Kudo and Warthog in S.A. You will likely see bigger Kudo in the Khomas Hoekland in Namibia and they have a lot of warthogs. To things about Namibia:

1. You will most likely require much less walking.
2. It will be less expensive by as much as 30%.

I have shot Kudo in both places, I'm going back to Namibia in April 2010.

Check with Van Heerden Safaris in Namibia. He has a web site. No Agent or Outfitter, You book direct with the PH. My son and I hunted SA and Namibia. We much prefer Namibia. We both shot large Kudu and passable hogs. The airport/entry in Namibia is much easier than SA. Hunt prices are cheaper also.
Good luck.
