Not sure how they can just close down. Has the company been sold? One would think they would try to recoup some value. I believe their many blocks were held by multiple related companies.

I think Andre Roux was managing it for them along with Eric Pasinisi?

When elephants were hammered most recently I bet it hurt them badly as they were selling a lot of 21 day safaris for elephant (or perhaps shorter safaris with paid up 21 day licenses). I understand there were some clients who would purchase 2 21 day safaris and shoot 2 elephant in a week and then leave.

I never hunted with them but have heard that some of their blocks in the Selous were/are very good. Their prices are very high- even for Tanzania...

The ban on trophy imports is starting to tell. TAWISA was reported to be spending roughly half a million dollars on anti poaching and funded over 100 scouts in the Selous.

Their removal from these areas will result in the massive if not total loss of Elephant and Lion.

Hunters are caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea: Hillary would have been even worse. As the world continues its transition from agrarian to urban, hunting as a sport and a way of life will continue to be marginalized and misunderstood. Of course, the way the world is heading, the lack of hunting opportunities may be the least of our worries.

+1. Unfortunately, your last sentence may be the most important of all. We may all look back, not that many years from now, and long for the days when loss of hunting opportunities was one of our biggest worries.

Of course all of you are all correct with your comments about this subject with Trump and his silly insistence re elephant trophy importation. The beginning of the end was the last round of organized elephant poaching, which transformed their blocks into being uneconomical entities.

If the company change is true, this is a huge loss for the Selous GR as Pasinisi's investment there for the last 40 years or so has been incredible. I don't see how a photo safari company can fund anti-poaching in their areas.

Certainly, if true this is a tragic development as many parts of the Selous are pristine wilderness.

If the dam is built, does that mean most of the Selous is going to be a lake??

The Selous GR has 54,000 square kilometers. I just looked it up.

I couldn't find any information on the size of the lake behind the proposed dam, but if memory serves me correct, it is under 5,000 square kilometers. It will certainly be larger than Mtera.

Too bloody right it will be........ I can't think of a bigger disaster for the SGR than the Chinese & dam combined.

From Eric Pasanisi:

To the USFWS , you saving the animals to death , you don’t understand what you are doing to Africa , the statement below is a very sad but truthful one ,

I confirm that I surrendered all my hunting blocks of all my companies today.

My family has been the longest operating company in Tanzania- for more than 40 years.

We have been the biggest operator in Tanzania and all of Africa.

We have held the largest part of the Selous, with prime blocks, the same since 1978 which I finished surrendering all today.

We have gone from 126 safaris per year to a handful because of the closure of US elephant and lion trophy imports.

We cannot book enough 21 day safaris to make a profit or stay in business without lion and elephant imports into the US. Our losses are escalating so I have to stop.

When U.S. elephant and lion hunting imports were threatened we stepped up our anti-poaching to 2.4 million dollars in three years.

We by ourselves funded 100 Selous Game Scouts for many years. You saw our books and took copies of our ledger sheets for US authorities.

You saw the newspaper clippings of the vehicles and plane our foundation delivered.

You even attended the public ceremonies with the Minister remember the work done!!.

I know that Warden of the Selous wrote to the U.S. how important our presence was to control poaching in the Selous.

At the same time I have donnated many full safaris to Shikar for auction to fund the $ 500,000 for lion studies and aging, work that was ignored by USFWS, perhaps because of Craig Packer, I do not know!!!

The efforts of Tanzania, of my companies and foundation have been completely ignored by USFWS, so we have already been operating at a loss for too long it is time to stop and I cannot guarantee that the biodiversity of the hunting areas will not be lost now!.

Our involvement in anti-hunting has become almost zero this year because our income losses. I think that the decisions by USFWS will eventually exterminate all Tanzania wildlife outside national Park because of their determination to stop the importation of trophies into the US.

Everything will end very quickly and wildlife will disappear in these areas hat represent almost 1/3 of Tanzania territory.

I have already returned 10 blocks the past years and with no hunters in the field it is going to be very difficult to save our last elephants.

Our poor elephants, our poor animals, SHAME on….!!!!

The real truth is that everyone does not care and nobody can realize the irreversible damage caused by such decisions. It is certainly the END OF THE GAME if your governments do not realize and help Tanzania.

Anyway, It is already too late for me, and soon it will be too late for other outfitters.

Kind regards

Eric Pasanisi.

This is a big blow not only to Tanzania and wildlife conservation but for the future of hunting in Africa as well and conservation remedies based on consumptive use.

The expense of protecting these wilderness areas can only be counterbalanced by the value of the wildlife within them. Once the value is crippled through poaching and/or neo-colonial actions of different governments and/or corrupt action of native governments, then the whole thing collapses.

Ironically, the ultimate lesson from all this may be that some players who are anti-hunting may observe the carnage and ultimately realize that what we've all been saying about conservation for years is true.

The Selous was great for elephant and still good for all other species there, but its enduring value for me is that its just the bloody bush for miles and miles. I bet to this day not all of it has been hunted or visited.

All the bad guys are laughing at Trump and the rush will be on to exploit Pasanisi's old blocks- once and for all.

Pitiful...

What a very sad day for all of us!

Terrible, but sadly unavoidable, given recent events.

Great, forward-thinking men established the Selous, and made sure that hunting in the Selous kept the animals who live there safe and flourishing.

Now, their efforts, over many decades, have been undermined, right before our eyes, by criminals and blundering idiots, in fewer than ten years!

I don't know how Pasanisi's letter got out. I only sent it to a select few. It is a terrible measure of the damage that has been done under the Obama administration and Dan Ashe.

The dam and goldmines are likely to become a reality due to loss of revenue for the wildlife department due to FWS trophy import restrictions. The Selous is not all that will be lost. 70 other concessions have been surrendered and more are coming. Most of the habitat is unsustainable for photographic tourism and there are not that many photographic tourists in the first place. We are going into our 5th season without elephant imports and 4th without lion imports. This sort of conduct has to be knowing a deliberate.

It was Pasanisi that was funding 100 game scouts a year. Gerard Pasanisi was a father and pioneer of Tanzania hunting. What a loss. What a shame.

Perhaps there should be an oversight hearing for FWS, but the people that have done this have left or are soon leaving. Now Trump has become part of the problem. As one very bright man recently said, “ If Trump cares about the Animal behind the elephant logo of the Republican party, he better commit to trophy imports.”

I voted for Trump partly because I'm a life-long Republican, but mostly because the thought of Hillary as president was horrible beyond description. I thought Trump's sons, being experienced African hunters, would steer him in the right direction.

Trump threw us--and Africa--under the bus with his import decisions.

Today, he threw us here in the U.S under the bus regarding gun control. Not only does he support raising the legal age for purchasing a rifle (you know, the bad, scary ones) to 21, he also favors removing firearms from a person's possession if the individual is suspected of having some mental disorder--BEFORE due process. He says, get the guns first, then go to the courts.

If you're a guy and your wife, girlfriend or ex gets pissed at you, you could well get a visit from local law enforcement. Guilty until proven innocent. Bye, bye guns.

A sad day for those of us who trusted our president to do the right thing regarding hunting and guns!

I have little doubt that the actions of the USFWS has not helped the operators in TZ at all. Let's not forget the actions of the TZ government that kept many away years before the USFWS did anything.

Now there aren’t 2 elephants to hunt.

In the beginning it was 2 elephants, 4 buffalo a lion and leopard on 1 21 day safari.

What a terrible ending.

We have been hunting Tanzania for many years, and have never seen a single shootable elephant!

We have, however, seen hundreds of poached elephant carcasses!

If there is no anti poaching by private companies like this one, you can be sure we are going to see a lot more.

Absolutely!

The beginning of the end of the SGR during the first oil exploration project some 40+ years ago when the "cuts" were made; it opened up up the Reserve to poachers.

Pasanisi controlled most of the blocks in the southern sector through his 3 companies and with him packing up their will be no more anti-poaching funding, hence no patrols, hence more dead elephants.

His photographic activities I believe will be conducted in the northern circuit.

If the dam is built, does that mean most of the Selous is going to be a lake??

No but areas further upstream in the natural valleys are likely to be.

New villages will encroach on this water source for farming and being in such close proximity of the Reserve, will give rise to poaching; don't forget these people require much needed protein in their diet, especially if they are to toil long days in the field. Wink

I wouldn't be surprised if the Tanzania government just keeps the former Tawisa blocks and tries to operate them.

They can put up a big sign on the Selous GR gate for poachers:

No, Tanzania's national government will finally turn over the Selous proper to Chinese developers.
One big open pit mine.

I am truly saddened I did not take my honeymoon to the Selous in 2010.

They might have sniffed the Uranium deposits in the Mbarangandu or the source of alluvial diamonds that wash down into the Ruvuma River (from the Tanzanian side). Wink

That southern expansive part of the Selous was already difficult to monitor with the patrols he had established.

Just imagine the wild parties the poachers will have once the patrolling units are gone - they are probably celebrating the news of Pasanisi's withdrawal as we speak and looking forward to their good fortune.

Those areas might get taken up but with the current state of affairs surrounding the hunting industry, I have my doubts and if they do somehow get re-allocated, will the new concession holder be prepared to invest in the manner Gerard/Eric did or will they be the "hit and run" type of outfitter?

I recently received this message & scans from a friend of mine who was involved in the original planning back in the day & it gives you an idea of the magnitude of the project & what a disaster it will be for the Selous.

Posted with his kind permission.

"Steve, I saw on accurate reloading site on Selous issues question on how large would the Reservoir be on the dam project. I have ALL original reports and Studies done for this project back in 1980 period. I checked our the Reservoir size and it was projected at 1700 Sq. Kilometres maybe larger with latest plans, There would be pumping stations, pipe lines., roads, towns, power lines in all directions around dam and reservoir all in heart of Selous. The reserve will be history when first day of serious work starts"

From a separate message:

" I guess its time to show the real story on Selous dam project. Back in 1972 I worked in Selous I took out first Norway engineers when they did a quick study of basic dam zone. Here is cover of main Document that came out in 1979/80 period on dam Project. . I have some 10 reports on every aspect of this project. With efforts of Allen Rodgers our Head Selous Ecologist, myself, some folks from UN , Diplomatic contact with Norway groups a referendum was held in Norway on this project and Project was rejected by the people vote to keep Norway from getting involved etc. We all tried our best which worked back then but then the world started to change and now the end is near."

A friend of mine was having a lot of arguments with his wife (now ex wife) She called the cops on him once saying he was threatening her and he was armed. A swat team arrived and took away all his guns....so that fact was there long before any of this.

According to the headlines in today's news, it looks like its going to happen:

"TANZANIA has shortlisted five companies for the construction of East Africa’s largest hydro power dam along the Rufiji River in the heart of one of Africa’s largest remaining wild areas - the Selous game reserve.

The 2,100-MW Rufiji Hydropower Project which is expected to power the country’s emerging industries and export its surplus to the rest of East African countries, is expected to be commissioned any time from now. Chief Government Spokesperson, Dr Hassan Abbas told a press conference that 17 companies had expressed interest but only five submitted documents for evaluation.

Details from the Ministry of Energy show that construction of this hydro facility would involve building a main dam and appurtenant structures, with expected reservoir length of 100 km, covering an area of about 1,350 square km."
