Namibia in October

I've been reading the forum for a while, but this is my first post here. I tend to be more of a search function user than a poster. That being said, having selected the PH for my first hunting trip to Africa, I have two choices. October of 2008 or the usual June-Aug of 2009. I am told that the daytime highs tend to be in the 80-90F range during October, but that is only during the mid-afternoon. The morning and evening being much cooler. What are your Namibia experiences during this time of year? I would like to go with the sooner date, but am a bit leery about the October time frame.

Frostbite,

October should be fine it will all depends on where you will be hunting in Namibia as well? Even with higher temp you must remember that Namibia is mostly a dry country so humidity will be very low.

I will not hessitate to go hunt Namibia in October at all unless I was very sensitive to temp.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

I bet we were bumping 80 during the mid afternoon in June near Etosha Park. I imagine October that far north is quite toasty!

You can't paint all of Namibia with the same brush.

Far North (like Caprivi) it will be 100 to 110 and possibly higher.

Far South, not as hot.

Tell us where he hunts and you will get a better idea of the temp.

I hunted just west of Okahandja mid-September and it was starting to warm up quite nicely. Mostly cool until about 10AM then low to mid 90's in the PM. It was comfortable for me. A month later I'm not so sure I'd be quite as comfortable.
I tend to agree with Robert Johnson. October starts to get "toasty". Bring lots of sun screen, long sleeve shirts and a big hat for protection, and have fun! Cool

I hunted just south of Etosha during the last week of September/first week of October. Mid-90's with very low humidity was the afternoon norm.

You are better off at higher elevation and southern latitudes in Oct. E Cape might be your best pick for PG. For DG, higher elevations in Zim eg Doma, Mukwishi ..

Good point on the location, I should have been more specific. It is NW of Omaruru, near Uis.

The are several down sides to hunting in October. First you know to expect temps of 90-120f. I found it uncomfortable to hunt or even drive in the direct sun from 11am 3 pm. You will also find the capes of some animals like Kudu in very poor condition because of hair loss in October. The best time to hunt Namibia is late April - August
There is one very good reason why most outfitters have opening in October. It's not the best time to hunt!

Uis temp - Wednesday is 100, Thursday 98, Friday a cool 98

It's extremely hot and dry in the Caprivi in October, but it's the best time to hunt elephant.

Frostbite,

You might consider an early date April/May. Often there are openings then, the kudu will be rutting and in great physical condition.

Ahhhh, Uis! Cool I hear they have two restaurants now. Only one was open when we were there last year.
It should be just like August in the Mojave Desert (where I live).....only hotter.
Honestly, I personally would NOT be looking forward to hunting that area at that time of the year for all the reasons already pointed out. And, yes, I really do live in the Mojave desert.
