My list for next week's trip to RSA is gemsbok, waterbuck, blue wildebeest, Limpopo bush buck and impala. What looks more impressive on a wall between a long horned cow gemsbok or a shorter thick horned bull? What size horns do hunters usually look for in a respectable waterbuck? Thanks...Craig

Personally I prefer the male gemsbuck.....but it's a matter of personal taste - I guess the very best is a long horned male! Wink

The 2 areas we hunt in Tuli block Botswana which borders SA has very big waterbuck and we usually take 29-30 inch specimens.....sometimes bigger.

I also personally like the shorter but much heavier gemsbok bulls but if you saw one of those impossibly long 45" cows it would be a tough call. I think a 28" plus waterbuck is excellent anywhere but some places just don't have the genetics to produce one that large. Check with your outfitter so you won't be looking for something that isn't there.

Regards,

Mark

They all look good but I prefer the heavier bases of the males.

Have a ball.....wish I was going too.

I'll be hunting right outside of Elisras along the Limpopo river. Our camp is right on the river with Botswana on the other side.

Cunningham - I like your statement at the bottom because I'm going over with limited vision.

It depends if you are going to have the Gemsbok shoulder mounted or European mounted.
Regarding Wterbuck 26†up.
