Elephant kills Zimba man

By Martin Mashekwa in Kalomo

Fri 12 Apr. 2013, 14:00 CAT

AN elephant has killed a man of Mantanyani village in chief Sipatunyana's area in Zimba district as he was going home after disembarking from a Livingstone-Lusaka passenger train on Tuesday morning.
Both local Zambia Wildlife Authority and police sources confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Kalomo and identified the deceased as Ketson Muzingwani, 30 whose body was in Zimba District Hospital mortuary.
Both confirmed that Muzingwani was crushed by an elephant on his way to his village around 02:00 hours.
Nearby villagers who heard him scream are reported to have discovered Muzingwani's body with his cell phone torch light on and suspect that he may have beamed the light at the animal which made it charge on him.
Meanwhile, ZAWA officers have been deployed to the area where marauding elephants are reported to have been spotted in an effort to gun them down.
The three herds of elephants were reported by villagers in Siantontola farm in Mayoba area on Monday and were said to be terrorising people in Sikanchele areas near Munkolo Basic School of Zimba district.

If they afforded a small daily rate how many would be ready to go.

Zambia: Elephant Kills 3 People
By Brian Hatyoka, 12 April 2013

A RAMPAGING elephant has killed three people in Kazungula District, sending residents scampering for safety.

The beast, suspected to have migrated from neighbouring Zimbabwe, left a trail of destruction in Chief Sekute'a area as it trampled the victims, two of them women.

Southern Province police chief Charity Katanga confirmed the incident which occurred in a space of two hours in three different villages.

Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers were alerted and gunned down the animal, two hours after the brutal killing of the three victims and destruction of vegetation.

ZAWA officers later donated the meat to the three bereaved families.

Ms Katanga said the elephant on Thursday killed Rosemary Kankolo Mapena, 59, of Mwilu Village around 06:00 hours, Chuma Siabene, 53, of Siakantu Village around 08: 00 hours and Francis Mwangala, 53, of Mufana Village at 08:30 hours.

"The elephant was wondering in the area and it seems that it is the same animal which recently killed another person in Zimba District," she said.

The bodies of the three victims have been taken to Batoka Hospital mortuary in Livingstone.

ZAWA area warden Brighton Kasamu said his officers killed the elephant the same day at 11: 00 hours and gave the meat to the three bereaved families.

"We trailed the elephant and killed it about 200 metres away from the last village where it killed the last person. We have since given its meat to the three bereaved families," Mr Kasamu said.

Chief Sekute said he was relieved that ZAWA managed to track down the stray elephant.

He said had it not been killed, the wild animal could have killed more people.

The traditional ruler suspected that the animal came from Zimbabwe after it was wounded.

Southern Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe visited the bereaved families in Kazungula yesterday and described the incident as tragic and regrettable.
