I am heading to Zim. this fall. The problem is that I have to overnight in Joberg. Then off to Vic Falls the next morning. What does this require in regards to rifles? If anyone has any experience or suggestions the help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a place to stay? If not, I can recommend Afton Guest House

You will be required to clear your firearms and ammunition in Jo'burg. Therefore, you will need and In Transit Firearms Permit from South Africa.

You can do this yourself or hire one of the services to do if for you in advance.

See Paragraph 2.H. in the Tips and Packing List for the procedures for acquiring a South African Import Permit.

Regards,

Terry

I'm doing the same thing next month. Terry's got it exactly right.

And remember that you need at least three blank pages in your passport for RSA, each time you plan on going through passport control.

Willie,

Besides following Terry and Steve's advice above, my understanding is you will also need a hotel/guest house that has a gun safe. A lockable gun case in your room is not acceptable in RSA. The Afton House Terry recommended is well suited for securing your firearms.

Is the Afton House far from Joberg Int. Airport? I assume they are able to pick us up and drop us off at the airport.

Willie,

Terry says it all above.

I did that same trip last June. I had scheduled a week in Zim for Buffalo and PG, then another week and a half in RSA at two different camps for other PG.

My flight from NY and the slowness of getting the Firearms Permit made me late getting out of the Jo berg airport. I stayed at Afton that night and didn't have any problems. The next morning I flew to Vic Falls.

Afton is very hunter friendly, and a nice place to stay. Good people.

Shawn at Gracy Travel recommended Afton to me, and she made all my travel arrangements, including the firearms paperwork. Even got me seats on SAA with extra legroom. She did an excellent job.

Hope you have a great trip.

It's not far from the airport, pick up and return to airport are included, also included is breakfast. They will take you for lunch and dinner at several of the local restaurants (cost of lunch and dinner is not included in the room rate, but transport to and from restaurants is included in the room rate). I like Ocean Basket and La Gondala restaurants.

Terry

Ditto on the Afton House as I have used them 3 times in the last 4 years. They will meet you at the airport, take care of your overnight stay, and get you back to the airport for your flight the next day. Super people, don't see how you could find a better situation.

Another vote for Shawn at Gracey Travel and Afton House.

Shawn will get all the paperwork and tickets to you long in advance with no drama. Emails are answered promptly and when you call their phone number you will get to talk to a live person.

Louie and his wife at Afton House are simply as good as it gets. Louie retired from South African Airlines. He knows as much of the ins-outs of the Jo'Burg airport as anybody, period. Money well spent staying at his place.
