Norbert, That is interesting about the 400 gr .458 from the Lott. I calculated the Penetration Index, KE divided by Frontal Area X SD and a 400 gr .458 at 2400 fps is only 84. A 400 gr at 2450 fps is 88. Thats not too impressive. A 500 gr at 2040 fps is 95. (Same as a 400 gr 416 at 2,100 fps). A 500 gr at 2,100 fps is 101. I doubt a Lott loaded for Africa in a 24 inch barrel could exceed 2450 fps, and a PI of 88. I would shoot a 400 gr North Fork bonded soft point in a Lott anyday, since it has a fairly modest expansion of .80 - .85 caliber, but mass really makes a difference in the solids. Was this bullet a Barnes, or another brand? Andy

Andy, That is probably the case. 400 grains is too big (?).

From comments made by those who have actually used FN and RN bullets in comparative tests we can summarise as follows: In animals, monometallic FN bullets penetrate deeper than monometallic RN bullets. This is the observation of many experienced professionals when hunting in Africa. In building and construction materials, RN solids go deeper than FN solids. Go back on the discussions and look it up. Depending on what you want to kill, you should pick your bullet appropriately. Now, it is said that an elephant seems as big as a house when one is close to it but it is still constructed from tissue and bone......
