Unfortunately, it's part of hunting to eventually wound something. It's when you don't successfully track it down and finish it that your conscience really bothers you, and yours clearly does. But we all try to learn from that and resolve to both shoot smarter and exhaust every effort to find the animal if something goes awry. It's all we can do, and we should do no less. Of course buffalo are notoriously hard to bring down once they get started, so that should earn you a lesser measure of guilt. So what happened?

Palmer, Thank you for sharing. Could you give some more details? I'm guessing a gut shot? Unfortunatley sometimes these things happen. It doesn't feel to good and it takes a man to admitt his mistakes, get over it, saddle up, learn from the experience and become a better hunter for it. PS Any "hunter" who claims to have never made a mistake is one of two things. 1. A Lying sack of s.... 2. Hasn't done much hunting/never has hunted off the web.

Palmer, Very sad, I know what your feeling, but as a few other members have said, and I agree, "It takes a real sportsmen to see his mistakes and learn from it!" Any story on how this happened?

If you claim to have never missed or wounded an animal, you simply have not hunted enough. It happens to all of us. The good news is most of us learn from the experience.

Phil, The hunt was great - but Ive never had a bad hunt that was arranged by Ray Atkinson especially the one he arranged for me with you. While sitting on my deer stand this weekend the idea stuck me that some anti-hunting group could use the picture for their campaigns so I deleted it when I got home.
