G'day everyone.

Can someone tell me about the current situation as to the hunting of cape buffalo in the Omay hunting area with regards to animal numbers and quality.
What other plainsgame is available in this area as well.

I must add that I'm not looking to hunt necessarily the biggest, just a good quality hunt with reasonable animal numbers.

Cheers,
Mark.

Do mean Omay South or Omay North? They are very different.

You need to talk with Martin Pieters who operates in that area. He is a fantastic guy and has do a heap with that area since taking over from i believe butch walker.Have a look on the discount hunts forum and you will find his posts with web address. I personnel took a fantastic old dagga boy of 37" with a 13 1/2" boss in the umi river with matt stanton there and Martin counldn't have been more helpful.

I hunted Omay North in 2004 when it was operated by HHK. Back then there were good number of buffalos. I started my hunt by looking for a Sable as my PH told me that Sable will be the hardest animal on my wish list to get.

We followed Sable tracks and would bump into buffalos now and then. The second day while following Sable tracks we found ourself in between a very large herd of about hundred buffalos, we couldn't get a shot on a big bull that was not more than 15 yards away as there was a cow in between who saw us and bolted away taking the whole herd with her.

On the third day while driving in the morning we saw a Sable in the middle of the road looking at us, before we could decide on the trophy quality the Sable jumped into the thick bush. We followed and after three hours we bumped into a lone dagaboy sleeping in the grass, on hearing something the bull stood up and offered a frontal shot from 35 yards. My PH told me to take him which I did with a 375. The bull turned 180 degree and headed away, I bolted another round and shot again hitting the bull two inches above the tail and spineing him, the bull went straight down as if struck by lightning. The bull measured 38" with hard boss, it was my first Buffalo.

So there were good number of buffalos back then but I hunted the Omay south later and found that the south is a bit better for Buffalos.

Martin Pieters has a first class operation. Omay is not flat, open savannnah. Make sure you can walk a bit and you will have a wonderful hunt.

I hunted in Omay North last October. As others have stated Martin runs a very good operation. It is a very good buffalo area.

Mike,
Hope you didn't mind me linking your report!

"walk a bit" is an understatement to say the least. You take a good hard boss in the Omay you will have earned it.
