Why do we never hear much of him? I cant recall a hunt report (good or bad) from his operation on these pages.
According to his website he has a fair but of accolades.

I met him in the King Salmon airport a couple yrs ago, seems like a real nice guy.

Have you seen the price of his hunts? $31,000 for a Buff hunt (if I remember correctly). I would guess that he doesn't get many, if any, clients from AR.

He is reputable and has an interesting background. He is VERY expensive. I tend to think that very few that post here can afford those hunts as relatively few of the hunting population in general can afford those hunts.

As a side note to this question I wonder what he is going to be doing for 2010 hunting. When I was in Zim this year my PH told me that both Jeff Rann and Johan Calitz had lost their hunting rights in the Delta due to the PETA crowds influence on the President and the delta only used for photo safaris.

I believe Mr. Calitz has the hunting rights in the Okavango Delta until 2012, but I could be wrong.

My husband attempted to book an elephant with Mr. Calitz in the Delta for 2012 and the hunts were all sold out with a waiting list.So he booked for CT2. This was through booking agent Bob Kern.

Last week Friday,my husband received a call from The Hunting Consortium that there was a cancellation in NG32 (Delta) for September 2010 and did he want the hunt. So next September we will be in Okavango Delta and I cannot wait to see it.

I heard he charges a higher price if he conducts the hunt himself, rather than one of his PHs.

Off topic but doesn't Jeff Rann also own the Triple 7 ranch in Texas? They are also quite expensive.

Good Hunting,

Yes he does. It has been on TV a number of times.

One show was very interesting. They had a dangerous game range with life size targets in hunting situations. It looked like a lot of fun to me.

You are probably right Kathy. Either way it is going to be a bad situation for the elephants in the delta.

It seems that some of the Botswana outfits are setting up camps in Mozambique. Hopefully hunting will come back to the Okavango at some point when I have the money to go.

I guess I should have stated in my original post about the prices. STEEP

I also checked out the 777 ranch prices, you'd have to want a Whitey in a serious way to dump that kinda change on one.

Hi Martin: Welcome to the board. You sure you really wanted to sign on? Cool Saw a nice segment with you and a client on one of the hunting channels the other day. See ya in Reno. Let's have an African glass of wine!

According to the TV shows I've watched:

Jeff Rann had a buffalo hunt on recently and stated that it was the last hunt for that concession as he had lost his lease.

Mr. Calitz just finished a series of shows with Tony Makris on Under Wild Skies in Mozambique.

makes me damn glad i hunted Botswana in '05. things have definitely taken a turn for the worse. i have to say i saw more dangerous( as well as other game ) in the Okavango than in all my other trips to Zim., Tz., Moz. combined. prices have headed out of sight and about the only thing left is elephant and plains game on game ranches.

Yeah, the same thing will probably happen there as happened in Kenya. I hope not. Some people simply don't get it.

A few years back, he had his personal daily rate at $2000. That was about 8 years ago. Not sure of it the same today.

I am not sure of his actual rates, but have heard of complaints that he had charged HIS rates for the whole hunt, while he actually only conducted the hunt on a few days. Apparently the client had a good hunt, but he was rather pissed about the extra charge.

I wonder what is so special about hunting with him?

What is so different than hunting from the same camp with another PH?

I know one of the guys that hunts for him, Gary Mckenzie, is a first class PH and has loads of elephant experience.
Most of the concession areas within the delta have been changed to photographic areas with long leases of 15 years being issued!! However, the community managed areas on the fringes of the delta or for that matter the whole of Botswana are still being utilised for hunting so guys like Calitz will not be affected too much. I believe he operates 4 community managed areas i.e NG41.
According to Gary, Rann Safaris will only be operating out of their CT area this year!!
Tough times ahead Eeker

This is a good map of hunting/photo areas in the Okavango Delta.

I saw Jeff Rann on that buffalo hunt and he said it was the last buffalo to be hunted there,I believe he said in NG29. From the map it looks like a huge concession.

I don't mind paying a premium for a great safari, with a great outfitter in a great area, and I have done so several times.

But I have always put Jeff Rann's offerings in the same category as Robin Hurt's - and that category is: vastly overpriced.

In other words - given the competition - not worth it.

Still, they seem to do quite well for themselves.
