Very nice wood. I think the wood from Dressels seems to fairly good compared to the price. I really like black and yellow wood. Great suff

What do you guys make of claims that the supply of good walnut is 'rapidly diminishing' as new trees are not replacing the cut timber + they take forever to grow?

Hoss- that's a good question. It makes sense that old growth trees may be diminishing but it still seems to be available, albeit at higher prices. I agree with Ray: one can still find pretty darned nice European blanks for under $1000 if one shops. Try Jim Preslik, Heritage Walnut, Rimrock, etc. Some of Dressel's lower price blanks are also very nice, assuming they don't have bark pockets and pin holes, etc.

I think many of the blanks are not only over priced but undersized. I sent a Dressls blank to Mike Kokolus and he is sending it back to me because its to small for his CZ pattern.

I've bought a couple of blanks lately, and not sure I'm happy with any of them.

But I am happy with my boyds $65 laminated stock

Bill Dowtin, Dowtin Gun Works has some of the best wood I have ever seen and the price is right..It comes out of Russia and Australia...You might want to take a look at his web page and give him a call...

Wow! There's definatly some incredable wood out there just waiting to get together with some steel! And I guess you have to pay for it too... Very nice stuff.

I personally would not give $2800 for that quality of wood on the Dressel sight. It would take an awsome piece of wood to get $2800 out of me...The only difference in $1000 wood and $2800 wood seems to be price IMO.....

Yes they have some great pieces for $ 1000.
But if you want top Q on both sides and also in the front of the stock then you must pay Big $$

This is a very nice piece for $ 2000 but the front is not so even and dark as the rear.

Again the piece for $ 2800

Remember if this wood is bought by a master gumsmith and made into a best quality rifle then the price tag will be $10.000-15.00

Like this Rigby in English walnut price $23.000

PS I would never pay that kind of money for a bolt action.

Andr

Jeff, my buddy bought a blank from them, not for that price, but a nice piece of English. They seemed like nice people to work w/. Just my 2c worth, there isn't a piece of firewood on earth worth $2000 to me. Look enough & you'll find many nice pieces in the $500 range.

He is having a .404 made up on a BBK02 that he has had for awhile. I tried to talk him into .416 Rigby, but after he saw my .404, he wants one!
