The Kudu price per inch thread reminded me of how much economics plays into conservation, and that the key to ecosystem restoration (wildlife protection, rural empowerment, and on and on and on, including the preservation of hunting rights globally) is in the Payment for Ecosystem Services.

(you read it here first) ... Smiler

Thanks for this heads up notification! The only remark I wish to make is that it deserves a more "descriptive" name? dancing

After a few years of participation on forums, I have learned that:

One can cure:

Lack of knowledge – by instruction. Lack of skills – by practice. Lack of experience – by time doing it.

One cannot cure:

Stupidity – nothing helps! Anti hunting sentiments – nothing helps! Put-‘n-Take Outfitters – money rules!

My very long ago ancestors needed and loved to eat meat. Today I still hunt!

Actually, Andrew, I spent a bit of time (5 or 10 minutes, anyway) attempting to do just that. The best I could come up with was the International Monetary fund for the Protection and Restoration of Ecosystem Services (IMPRES) … Needs work; I know.

But according to the most recent numbers, a 10,000 hectare game ranch in SA (for example) provides an estimated US$28million in ecosystem services per year to the global community – which they get free because it’s an externality.

But the current trend is that ESs should be internalized; i.e.: paid for by including their cost in the price of goods and services – a slippery-slope to be sure, but it would at least disperse some urban wealth back to the land (where it belongs).
