Hi All

Thought I would post some photos of my latest obsession.... bushpigs.... I have been chasing after them for the past 10 months when I can and have been unsuccessful as yet. the pigs in the photo are the two smaller ones who frequent my feeding spot where I feed them mielies soaked in local beer (Chibuku Beer) they absolutely love the corn and come in apparently on clock work. the time and date of the camera is way out and It is up at the moment hopefully photographing the big boar who comes in later on. I had one photo of him but my laptop was stolen and along went my prize photo.

Two weeks ago one sunday afternoon I decided to take a walk into the back to see what was going on, and to my suprise there were 5 bushpigs having a fat snooz in the midday under the marula tree. No i did not have my rifle, and it will be the last time that I walk around without it

Just for information the water trough is about 1.4m long and 40cm wide. You can see the elevated blind in the background, it is made from Bluegum branches and logs and has a double lining of shade cloth on the inside. In the hide I have an inverter connected to a batter and a light that is stationed about two meters above the spot where we feed. I will post more pics by the weekend as I get time. I have also attached a photo from the blind at night of the feeding spot, I have had to make a pen of some sort to ensure that only the pigs can get in to feed as the impala and bushbuck have taken a serious liking to the feed.

A good trick is to dig a shallow pit about 2 meters by 1 meter and about 30 centimeters deep.

make it soggy and wet in the bottom and put your feed in there. Then top it op with rocks about the size a number 3 rugby ball, the pigs love to root, and will roll the rocks out to get to the feed, but the Impala, birds and other raiders will not be able to.

Your pigs should come in on a regular basis.

Get rid of the light....the full moon is enough and you have a nice and open spot. Put in the hours and they will.....DIE!

And before I forget, do not ask me how, but those big boars wisen up to the trailcam very quickly.....Make the whole area wet around the bait area, nice and muddy....if you see the big boy tracks, take the cam away, and sit the hours out....

Welcome to the obsession, I share it with everything in me. Give me a call if you want more tips. I got them pretty much figured out by now.....

And man, do they taste good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck

I thought bushpigs would be the easiest thing on my list in African hunting. Little five was no problem, Big five isn't finished, but bushpigs are still on the none taken/to do list. They seem pretty smart as far as pigs go.

To hunt them with intent, not flushing by chanche, is specialized and very difficult.

Not a lot of PH's specialize for them, but I'm one of them. Give me a shout if it becomes an obesession, I should be able to feed the addiction.... Big Grin

It makes it great fun though!

Thanks for all the encouragement!!! I even dream of the bastards!!!! lol

Charl will take you up on the offer, thanks!!! Cant do away with the light, need it as I want to shoot one with my recurve - E-mail will be arriving shortly

Use enough gun - nice pig!!! Very lucky

The big boar is pretty decent, I had a nice upclose photo of him but that went walking with my laptop, he stuck his face right into the game cam when it took the photo and by the looks of it the fold in his ears is at least 4" long, but he is one sly bastard and will be the first one I shoot out of the lot.

Apparently the sows have given birth to three little ones so the future bushpig stock is on the rise!!!

.458Aubs: Just to tell you how lucky I was, we had hunted them for three separate nights, sitting in blinds over bait. The activity was there, but the pigs seemed to wait until we had left the blind in the wee hours of the morning before coming in and feeding. Later on we were sitting around the campfire one night relaxing after a hard day of hunting when the camp manager suddenly came running up to us at the compfire and said that there were three bushpigs feeding outside of camp on some bones that one of the skinners had tossed in the brush. Not believing my ears, I grabbed the .375 with solids. When the flashlight came on I shot the big male pictured. Later on the hunt we saw three others during another evening, but I had already taken one.

Aubrey,

Up until last year I had wanted a bushpig for 14 years. One of the PH's on Mokore saw 3 go into some big rocks for a midday snooze and we stalked into the spot late afternoon. We caught them unaware and I got the sow and a boar. My girlfriend said they were her anniversary present. How's that for picking the right present? Anyway much luck to you. Looks like your set up will have produce eventually.

We hear of these stories all the time, and they are so true. Second biggest boar I hunted was with Terry Blaauwkamp from AR. Me and Terry were out early one morning on top of the mountain hunting for some of those moster Kudu bulls we tie to the trees Big Grin

Next moment a saunder of pigs cam trotting cross our front, with a big male in the front. I did not hesitate with the sticks and Terr did not hesitate with the .300

That was the first one I hunted in day time, although I have seen them on other accasions in the day. And I have been "out there" for 26 years with a rifle in my hands.

Sorry, might be useless info, but I think interesting to the topic.

Use Enough Gun & Mark

It just shows always have your rifle with you on the ready in case you run into you trophy of a life time. I hashed my chance up three weeks ago when not carrying my rifle in the bush, ran into a 5 of em killpc

I am hoping to get back there within the next week or so and am hoping like hell to get one for starters.

Use Enough Gun - I have on three occasions sat out in the hide on my own and stayed out until the rocks start looking like warthogs digging.... after deciding that the hallucinations were after all not real I called it a night, only to find that they were there right after I left.

Sooner or later diana will favor me and I will have a well earned trophy (which is any mature bushpig)

Question to guys reading the forum - what constitutes a trophy bushpig for you?

Hey Jerry!

Firing on all cylinders again? Nice bushpig. Good colour, typical from our area - and all hunted during the day!

Aubs: I must maybe arrange a bushpig hunt for you - no bait and lights and throughs and shit like that - just a good ol' stalk - in daylight. It is not good that a man battles with bushpig like that ... Big Grin

Oh God, bushpigs, they will drive men too drink and women too the divorce court,

I have hunted all, elephant buff etc. but when someoen mentions pigs, I am there in a flash, but I must admit hunt then a lot we do, shoot them a lot nooooo dancing

Johan, yes on my Cahorra concession we also shoot them in daylight , and have seen really good ones early mornings rooting in the river beds coming inot the lake,

Outside Pretoria , I have a place that I hunt them in daytime as well, a thick riverine forest area, early morning beautifull

Then we also hunt them with dogs , a bit less sophisticated but too me also a lot of fun

Eish....

Thats some fine looking bacon.

Kwan,

Nice one with the revolver.

How close did you get before the shot and what calibre is the revolver?

.458Aubs,

How close are your hide for a shot with a recurve?

Have you shot at a target at night with the bow?

As soon as the sun goes down shooting a bow in the dark is very interesting.

Another thing I have seen with game coming to a blind at night is that the slightest noise like nocking and arrow will spook them as there is no birds and other sounds to hide your sounds that you make in a hide during the day.

Vasbyt!!!

You will get him!!!!

Revolver is a Ruger Security Six, 6 Inch 357 Magnum,

Have had it since I was 16, and have shot a lot of animas with it, up too and icluding Gemsbok ad Kudu, just a pity when young we never though about photos,

Distance was , sorry too say for first shot was about 45 meters , he was running away, and I thought what the hell , last was about 7 meters, and there were another one or two in the middle somewhere, not one of my proudest moments, but he was in the fridge and tasted damn good as well.

Thanks for the offer, will definately take you up on it - julle vat nie kak nie.... lol

I am planning on spending the whole of next week end in the hide and will come right, I will keep you updated.

Jakkals

The hide is elivated to 3 m above ground and I am 15m from the feed, shooting the bow at night is not easy and I have been practising as often as possible in similar conditions. I doubt that I will be using the Recurve as the dog has managed to get hold of it, and it did a pretty decent job of wrekking it.

The hide works well with cutting out sounds, our Impala are skittish as hell(dogs used to chase them around - that dog has moved on to higher hunting grounds) and last weekend they were even walking under the hide with new bornes (Not older than 1 day old)

Thanks for the encouragement

Okay

The hunt friday night lasted until about 8pm I was watching a bushbuck ram and a duiker feeding about 30 yrds from the hide when my phone started going made in the hide(had it on silent) my wife was in trouble and had to get to a hospital. she is 15 weeks pregnant and immediately the worst came to mind. 2 hours later and I am sure a good number of speeding fines(counted at least 3 flashes -190kph) and we were back in Johannesburg at the hospital - turned out it was kidney stones Eeker

So i am planning on getting back in the hide in the next couple of days. will keep updated.

Walter - Any luck last night?
