My wife is looking for Xmass gift ideas for me. I need ammo carriers for Tanzania in Aug. Anyone tried the Roosevelt & Drake "Chamba"? I'm interested in opinions on others. Galco? Boyt? Murray?

I would stay away from Murray Custom Leather because the ones I got from them are rather cheesy. The leather is too thin and they have a 1 size fits all approach with 2 different positions for securing the top.

My personal favorite is Africase:

Africase will make them to fit your specific caliber if you send off some dummy rounds.

Dan's making a great recommendation. I bought the Africase on his advise and was very glad I did. (FREE advise from an attorney! clap)

If you get them put a nice coat of good quality leather dressing on them and they are ready to go.

There is nothing "cheesy" about the Murray Custom Leather shell holders I own. I have no complaints about them.

I used the Rossevelt & Drake ammo carriers, don't know if they were the "Chamba" model or not. I had one for my .416 Rem and another completely different model for my plains games cartridges which was .358 STA. I kept both carriers on a belt and simply strapped it on when I left the truck, knowing I had either ammo with me when I picked up a rifle I needed for Buff or Plains game. Both models had a covering flap, which I found useful to shade the cartridges from the hot sun. The two distinctively different models told me which to use, depending on the rifle I carried. This system proved very easy in the moments when time was of essence. wave thumb Good shooting.

Where can I get an ammo carrier that has an open bottom and top so its really just a loop that the cartridge fits into. That way you can pull cartridges from top or push up from bottom. I think Mark Sullivan wears something like this. It will need to fit 500 NE. Preferably a 6-10 round carrier that slides onto a belt. Good quality is paramount.

I too disagree with 500 Grains on the Murray Leather issue. I have a twelve round belt and it is very well made and has served me well. I don't like the kind of ammo carrier that slides on a belt as much as the type that are incorporated into their own belt.

For the slide on type I have three Galco's of two different designs. They are well made. I used two of their Safari Five or whatever its called for my 375 ammo and they work fine and took some abuse as the trackers each carried one on his belt for the entire 17 days of hunting this Oct. Scrathes but really none the worse for wear.

My 2 cents worth,

JPK

I've never tried the Africases. But I do have about eight or ten of the Murray carriers--in three different sizes, BTW--and a couple of his belts, too. The belts are contoured and are really top notch. And so are the carriers, IMO.

I bought a boyt about a month ago, and when I turned it there was a big sticker that said MADE IN KOREA. If I had it to do over I would have forked out the extra money for a murray.

Get the Murray with the elastic loops. I think you'll be happy.

A second vote for the Africase. The quality of the leather, and the stitching beats all the others I've seen.

Just recently, I was in London, and stopped by some of the top-notch gunmakers there (Purdey, H&H, Boss etc). None of the ammo carriers ANY of them had were anything near the Africase in quality.

I carried two Africase w me this november. After warming up in the sun and with use for a few days they were perfect. A bit slow to reload prior to that even though I had filled them w ctgs a month before trip. Craftmanship excellent. I would just wear any leather for a couple weeks prior to a hunting trip to work the leather. I loved mine.

My PH had a Trader Keith culling belt that was faster to reload and could carry other stuff but did not protect the ctgs as well.

the Africase is quality leather.

I like the shell holders from Murray that I have used. I second the comments about his belts. They are very nice.
