Lott ammo is easy to get in RSA its a factory round manufactured by PMP (pretoria metal pressings). In as you might have guessed Pretoria.

I have shot about a dozen of these 500 grain loads and they are quite stout. I did not chronograph them but if the recoil is any indication of the loads potential they should work quite well. They are just slightly longer then the American version. I had to bring my rifle back to John Ricks to have my chamber extended just a hair so I could be certain of using these in a pinch. They might have fit just fine as it was but we did not want to take any chances so John just made my chamber to fit the African length shells.

Anyhow I have seen Lott shells for sale so I doubt that it would be a struggle to find them if you really needed some.

Jim,

As to your point "Lott ammo is easy to get in RSA its a factory round manufactured by PMP (pretoria metal pressings). In as you might have guessed Pretoria." ...where do you suggest I might buy some.

I can only get PMP 458 Lott cases in bulk (250 per batch) from them direct at ZAR 5.00 per case. Love to try out some factory loads to compare them to my reloads.

PS - I shoot my Lott a lot, it get used for everything from baits to camp rations, I enjoy shooting for starters and as my countryman Alf has also already pointed out, the more you shoot..

Re PMP brass:

Spoke this morning to Tex Neethling, Marketing Manager for PMP (Tel. (012)318-1518) and he assured me that production is still fully going as usual.

Should you need brass from them contact their warehouse manager, J C Muller in Pretoria at Tel. (012) 386-1402 - they do carry a lot of stock according to Tex.

I must say that when I recently tried to buy PMP brass for lighther calibres, it was difficult to get hold of any immediately - had to wait for an order to be delivered to dealer.

Alf;

Your right wrt PMP availability (and larger calibre ammo) hence my question to JJHack.

It's becoming increasingly harder to source ammo and components for a number of the larger calibres nowdays; old standbyes like Lucas at the Powderkeg and Fred Tatos at Suburban guns do indeed still have some of the more "exoctic" stuff but at premium prices like you have pointed out.

I last bought boxes of 458 Lot brass direct from PMP via a Denel contact...that too has all but dried up.

What will become of Vektor etc remains to be seen; it's clear that the domestic market is not capable of supporting the business and it's attention in on far more lucrative (military) markets off shore.

I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I noticed folks from SA and was wondering about the possiblity of obtaining (importing) a Vektor mauser action to the states.

Thanks for any info or input.

Peter, When I come back I can bring you either loaded rounds or brass which ever you like. I have plenty in RSa right now as my Lott is not really used for any hunting. I can therfore bring all the ammo I'm allowed for you if you would like. Or all the brass you would want. It's certainly less then the 5 rand PMP is getting!

If PMP has struggled to produce the Lott brass that is news to me. I used it probably more then a year ago and saw it for sale in a couple places. Therefore assumed it was a more normal item around. The only PH I know that loads for it has never once mentioned a struggle to find brass or components. I'm sure if it was an issue for him he would have been after me to bring some components back for him as frequently as I travel back and forth.

Well I guess I know two PH's you being the otherone now! Funny thing is I know only 3 PH's that handload ammo , but I think 100% shoot handloaded ammo. It's funny that they all seem to want custom made loads so they all have their ammo built specific to their needs by a local guy. I think many use factory stuff for the hunting rifles but for the 458's 458 Lott's and 500 Jeffery, even the 375HH's I think they are all handloaded.

I was bringing lots of 500 jeffery for one of my PH friends there until the change in the law that the ammo has to match the gun you have with you. Then he ( they) started having a local German gunsmith in Pretoria build the ammo for them.

In one case I placed an insurance shot between the shoulders of a large downed cow. The 550 gr solid went though the spine and was found under the skin on the brisket. I didn't measure the depth of penetration but it had to be around 5 feet. I think if you want deep penetration out of the Lott give the 550 gr woodleigh a try. You won't be disapointed.

I just noticed that I had a typo in this post. In the first line that should have read "550 gr" Insted of "500gr". Sorry if that caused any confusion.

Hi Everyone

Especially Alf, Thanks again for all the stuff you gave me and the 416 rem ammo for the shop, I have not forgotten and will repay the debt

Concerning the choice of PH rifles, I have been guiding for 9 years and list as follows

375 H 7 H as the top choice ( ??)
458 win mag - a couple of guys I know, changed to Lott and then changed again to 450 Rigby, at least 5 Ph's I perosnally know are currentlu using the Rigby 450 and Ian vd Vyver who is using a 460 G&A is changing to 450 Rigby at the end of this season.

Reason for most of these choices , plain economics and avalaibility of compoents.

The 416 Rem is baliistically good but component and ammo is scarce, VLT only have ammo thanks to Alf

416 Rigby is picking up and another 7 I know are using Rigbys in either CZ or Brno and myself in Ruger , I alos have a 450 Rigby built to Rigby specs on a 602 action,

Most of my own hunts I use a 416 or the 450 . and thanks to a organization called Big Bore Association we get to play with them even more in simulated competition , in the last 4 years the standard of most members shooting has climbed dramatically because of the old adage of practise makes perfect

Good Hunting and all to everyone

Hi Alf greta these techno things are they not

Alf die mense sal nie glo nie maar ek sal dit skryf

Gentlemen and ladies , as our friend Alf mentioned I have a bucket of bullets collected and these 99 % of the them I was there personally , and about those I am prepared to voice my opinion

The 470 bullets mentione by Alf, and my apologies TeX for hijcacking this thread, were solids from Federal, client was Spanish and we hunted elephant in SA, HE WAS USING A hOLLAND 470 ,myself the 450 Rigbybolt action

He fired the first shots and ele stomed off in typical fashion, we followed up and ele waited three times behind trees and ant hills, evrey time thundering of as we approached, last time i sent tracker up in tree too see , a trees as small mopane shrub , elephant was waiting about 50 yards away in thicker mopane adn we walked in too say my unerpants was in my throat , is an understatement, at this stage I have faces buffalo charges and hippo but this was the fist ele ambush, he came out of those trees and all I could hear was his scream and the trees breaking , he anly came visible at about 20 meters , client fired a left and a right and I slammed a 500 mono Barnes just above the eyes, he went down like a train and i let client give him a final bentween the ears from the back again, reco\vered both frontal 470 solids , they did not penetrate at all , first was just above the left tusk in that thick skin above the tusk about 12 inces deep , the secon about 16 inches in centre of chest no vitals were hit, the third from the nack went inot the head about 10 inches , no vitals again ???

the 450 went in and out the back of head behind the left ear

I took a dislike in 470 Federals
