I am going to Namibia for this year's safari. My 375 is currently under the weather. I will take something bigger for eland and such, but I am considering taking my normal deer rifle for most of the smaller game(kudu, gemsbok, zebra). It is a 30-06 and my usual deer load is 180 gr Scirrocco's @ about 2750. Is this a tough enough bullet? The Swift manual says it will retain nearly 80% of it's weight, or would I be better off with a bullet that retains upwards of 90% like the A-Frame or North Fork?

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

If all of your shots are just right, the scirocco will be fine, but under more adverse circumstances, which can occur while hunting, I would prefer a high weight retention bullet such as the North Fork. www.northforkbullets.com

I think a Nosler partition, Woodleigh or Northfork is the way to go, why risk a bullet failure on an expensive hunt, bullets are the cheapest part of a Safari, always use the best and the best are the premium bullets and super premium bullets, and you won't come home with tales of woe and bullet failure.

When I hear someone spout tales of no need for premium bullets, that brand X will do the job, I take their hunting experience with a grain of salt, they need to hunt more before coming to such conclusions...Most of their conclusions come from shooting a couple of whatevers...The problem with a standard bullet is it works MOST of the time, and sooo, these guys to come to a wrongful conclusion IMO....If it were not true then no one would have ever produced a premium bullet, as there would have been no need...there was a need btw! thumb

I agree with Ray. I've had Swift Scirroccos turn inside out on Texas whitetail (150 grain/7mmRemMag). Personally, I would want a stouter constructed bullet, especially for eland.
