Elephant in TZ?

How are the ele's in Tanzania? I am planning an elephant hunt sometime in the next couple years. I will probably go with Botswana, but TZ is pretty tempting in that I could basically do a big 4 there for the cost of a botswana elephant. It kind of makes me nervous that you can't shoot an ele less then 55lbs. Obviously I would like something 65 or more but if it comes down to it on the last day of the safari I don't want my hands tied. Are Ele's larger then 55 easy to come by and if so what would be considered an average shooter in TZ? If anyone has experience in both Botswana and Tanzania with elephant let me know your impression.

Bulldog,

Your decision on how you want to hunt you ele is up to you..Tanzania ivory is longer and thinner..I have not seen any long ivory from Botswana worn and thick ivory..Zim ivory is thick also.. Any big ele is hard work and lots of walking...These are your decisions and must be looked at by you with a hard look and the money spender..
Lots of decisions!!! Cool

Bulldog,
Min ele size in TZ is 40 lbs (or 17 Kgs) or 1.7m outside length.

If you dedicate your hunt to hunting elephant alone and all other targets are targets of opportunity then i would say in a good block, with a decent Ph your chances at achieving a 40+lbs bull are quite high.

Forget about thinking of the big 4! 3 of the big 4 (the cats and ele) are relatively specialised hunts in that they require a lot of time. elephant hunting is the most spcialised hunt by most professionals so be prepared. If you don't set yourself priorities amongst these species you may very well end up with 1 out of the big 4......and then don't call your hunt a FUBAR Razzer

Bulldog,

I agree with Bwanamich, ele hunting is a specialised hunt. And demanding as well
My current Hunting partner, Tony, made 3 attempts prior shooting a modest tusker ( 2 in Zim and the third in Tanz)
I whish You can get the big4 but I have trouble to see how you can manage baiting and bait control for cats and long track & stalks for ele.
I heartily wish You good luck.

Bulldog, keep in mind that there are lot of unsuccessful elephant hunts in Tanzania. The minimum ivory size requirement is part of the problem, and PHs who don't know squat about elephant are the other part. Working in Tanzania, a PH will not get much elephant experience and may not have the skill to judge ivory. To be safe, a lot of them will tell you not to shoot.

It appears that one of the best places in Tanzania to hunt elephant are just north of the Mozambique border where they get some elephant travelling out of the Nyassa park. A few big ones do get shot every year.

If elephant is your priority, Botswana is a better destination.

In principle I agree with 500grns. However, there are enough decent Ph's to chose from for a decent ele hunt in Tz....Some outfitters to consider: Luke Samaras, Tanganyika wildlife safaris (or other Pasanisi companies), Miombo safaris, TBGS, Jerome Latrive. there might be others but any of these will do.

Bwanamitch,

You mentioned someone I've never heard of before. Who is Jerome Latrive, what company does he work for, why do you recommend him and what is his contact information?

Thanks Terry,

either Jean-Michel or his son Jerome would be excellent Ph choices although they do have other Ph's they work with on a time to time basis.
