Somewhere in the distant past someone posted all the details on making your own sticks. Did anyone save it and if so, could you post it?

DB Bill:

I don't have the article but did make a set based on it.

Go to Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and find three sturdy and straight 6 foot bamboo poles in the garden section. Then find a Hoover vacuum cleaner belt kit. I found mine at Target. Usually two in a pack. These are the round type about 3-4" in diamater. Wrap the belt around the poles about 8" from the top and you are good to go.

I have used mine many times with my .458WM at the range.

Total investment less than $10.00.

Try the search function on African Hunting for the sticks. Might still be available.

Good Luck.

Or you can go to the nearest tire store. Ask for old inner tubes. Find a bamboo patch. I have several. Anybody that wants some can come and get it. The dang stuff is like vertical kudzu. Cut a strip of old inner tube and tie three pieces of bamboo together with the strip of inner tube, and presto chango, shooting sticks. Total cost, nothing but a little time. Good hunting.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

Two bamboo fish poles and a yard of 3/8" surgical tubing works like a champ.....take the tubing on safari with you and find the bamboo sticks there.

After trying both 2-legged and 3-legged shooting sticks, I much prefer the 2-legged ones.

The 3-legged ones are extremely difficult to place on unaven ground, unlike the 2-legged ones.

I made my own but after shooting of a PH's Stoney Point shooting sticks, I bought a set and the work great. They are light, the legs collapse to put in the belt carrying case, they are sturdy, and they don't cost that much. Graf&Sons have them as would any of the major storing goods outlets. I know I paid under $100 bucks for them and now that's all I practice with.
