Actually a pretty good and accurate article. I was wondering halfway through if they would ever implicate the Chinese. Glad to see they finally did.

It's a very sad state of affairs with the Elephant these days. A far cry from what I expected to see just a few years ago.

The article also states that the Clinton (as in Bill) Global Initiative has partnered with several international groups to spend 80 million USD toward anti-poaching and illegal killing of elephants.

It is amazing how far many things have plummeted since 2008 began. When the US is weak (politically and economically)...the dark forces across the globe run amuck. In 2006, we were all celebrating the steady ascent of ele population.

Yes as the Anglo-sphere collapses. The wolves are going to roam the planet at will. I doubt there will be much of Africa as we know it left in 10 years.

Wow els, how convenient that you left out that the Brits were most efficient at slaughtering elephants in their "ivory El Dorado". The Brtits were most efficient at extracting whatever they can out of their colonies of which there were many. What about the fact that WE were carving billiard balls out of ivory in the early 20th century? Yes poaching is a problem. The Chinese are the culprits THIS go round but I do not see them having more blame than any others who have exploited Africa's resources than any of the others. As far as the "Anglo-sphere" being the best to manage this world? Get over yourself. It is the biggest reason we are in this position today!

Well, the modern concept of conservation is at least a Western invention. The concept of sustainable utilisation of wild resources was a pretty revolutionary concept 100-150 years ago. It runs in the face of thousands of years of culture globally. Conservation is fighting preservasion in the west at the moment but the concept has widespread adoption, is well entrenched and functioning. In some cultures, the idea doesn't even exist outside of a few strays on the fringe of society.

Funny thing about science, it keeps evolving. What is cutting edge now will be obsolete tomorrow. Conservation ideas now may seem barbaric 100 years from now. All I'm saying is, people who live in glass houses....
