Can two hunters combine their ammo, and put it all in one bag? Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Terry, I think you'd be at the mercy of the ticket agent, as the airlines consider a bag to belong to a single person (except perhaps in the case of a married couple traveling together). George

Even if you can, I wouldn't advise it. The best option (IMO) is to split two hunters' ammo between two bags so that each bag contains enough of each hunter's ammo to get by - should one of the two bags be lost in transit. Rember the adage about putting all of your eggs in one basket? Combine that with Murphy's law and you've got a recipe for disapointment.

I remember once arriving in Paris from the US with my family and alot of luggage. In addition I had two gun cases with one shotgun and one rifle, as well as 500 rounds of 12 gauge. The customs agent looked at everything and pronounced everything as admissable except for the 500 rounds of bird shot. I could only reply that there were 5 of us so it only amounted to 100 rounds per person. I got the classic French shrug of the shoulders from the Customs agent and he let us through. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Terry, I like the idea of splitting it between the two hunters with half of each hunters ammo..So if one bag is lost you still have half your ammo.. Mike

after having bags lost before, I would offer the advice to split everything into halves. My wife travels with me so its no problem for us, and when we get to wherever, if a bag is lost we still have enough to get by on. for 2 guys is probably even easier.

The fundamental answer to you questions is generally yes, it can be done. All the advice about splitting ammo etc., into different bags is still solid advice. I will echo Wink's experience about traveling in a group, as I have occassionally traveled to RSA, Zim, or even Texas with my wife and two sons to hunt. (4 in the party.) I generally need to split the ammo into two bags due to total wieght (22 pounds total), but put half of everyone's ammo in each of the two bags. So two different suitcases each have 11 pounds, but each contain a mix of ammo for all 4 hunters in the party. I have had no problems with this scenario on several trips. (Edited to correct my conversions from kilos to pounds. Personal limit is 5kg or 11 lbs.) Bill

With all due respect to all others' opinions, I would pack the ammo SEPARATELY, for two reasons: 1) To avoid any issues as to why there is 22 lbs of ammon in ONE person's luggage; and 2)To prevent the loss of one bag and ALL of the ammunition. The regs say that each person can have a maximum of 11 lbs. packed in their luggage. It doesn't say you can pack everyone's ammo in ONE bag. Why even flirt with problems with the airlines and possibly SAPS?

You might get by with it at one airport and not the next.....it cost me 700 Rand in Capetown to do that. I'd advise to pack the ammo as required...11 pounds max per person. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." A couple of years ago, I came back from RSA with my brother, and we had to "unpack" our ammo, SAA bundled it in one package, and shipped it back as a separate item. When we got to Atlanta, a representative of the airline came and asked me if this was mine, and I acknowledged that it was. He then advised me that it was grossly overweight. I then explained what had happened in RSA and that half of the ammo was my brother's and half was mine. That satisfied him, but he commented that the had it been mine, it would have been a problem.
