Guys,

Rick R and I are going to RSA on May 19.

He's found a nice fold-down belt wallet for shells. I'd like something similar for 9.3x74R spaced for a double rifle ... so one can get a finger between the shells.

Any good guidance on carrying extra shells and where they are available?

Thanks!

I have used Murray Leather products with complete satisfaction. I have his butt stock carriers on my doubles.
That is the fastest way to reload and keep your double "UP" and running.

Look at these on page 33 of Jeff's Outfitters [He's got all the stuff that Cape Outfitters used to have]

The absolute best, bar none, cartridge carriers I have found are made by Africase and sold by Heritage Arms. www.heritagearms.net

Here is how I rank them:

1. Heritage Arms/Africase - super top quality, thick leather, heavy stitching, well done

2. Murray Leather - good quality, but a compromise in many respects with corners being cut in both materials and manufacturing

3. Cape Outfitters - very cheesy, but better than a cardboard box

4. Uncle Mike's - junk.

On N. American hunts, I like a cartridge wallet that folds up and holds up to ten extra rounds.

In Africa, I like a cartridge belt with built-in loops for big-bore cartridges, such as .375 H&H, etc. I bought mine from Westley Richards.

For plainsgame cartridges (.300, .338, etc.), I like the pocket cartridge holders from Westley Richards best of all. No cartridge rattle, no mix-up with big-bore ammo, handy, and instantly available right in your front pocket. I prefer these even if I'm only hunting plainsgame and I'm only carrying one rifle.

I've got a Galco that holds ten rounds and a Murray that carries 5 magnum rounds. Both are belt carry, never liked the ones that fit on the butt of the rifle. Both have made multiple trips to the Dark Continent and have held up extremely well. I like everything Dick Murray makes. It's all top quality, never had anything he cut corners on. Some of his shell holders are all leather some have nylon sewed into them. Of course the all leather are more expensive but cheaper in the long run because they last forever!

I've used Murray and Galco both, and found their quality to be very acceptable. For my 470 I've used both the 5 round loop holder with no flap, and the 2 round holder with a flap that drops them into your hand. Both work well; just a matter of practice until you get comfortable. Neither one ever lost a cartridge.

Nothing against Heritage Arms - just that I haven't tried theirs.

500grains,

I have to disagree with you about Uncle Mike's Sidekick cartridge holders. Mine have served me well for several year since I bought them for Africa in '96. they hold my 450/400 3 inch cases well. They also don't react with your brass like a leather holder does.

To each his own, but mine have done a great job.

For my belt I like the ones that fold over so that when you open them there are 8 or 10 available...the holders are elastic and they are inexpensive enough to replace as frequently as needed.

I also have an elastic cuff for my rifle but I don't load it up with a lot of ammo....usually 3 "softs" and 3 solids and I arrange them so the solids are bullet up and the softs are bullet down and I leave several spaces between them.

I have seen one item for using with a double rifle that looks interesting but I don't know how it would work in reality but is is cuff wore on the wrist that holds 2 rounds. May or may not be faster than from the waist but it looks interesting.

Before I went on my first "solo" safari, a friend of mine ( Thanks, ADSmiler gave me a cartridge belt holder from Westley Richards for my 375 and that to me is the best. I went to order one for my 416 for my upcoming trip, but they were out through their website so I bought one from Murray. Can't see anything else better out there than eitehr one. I also think Murray's leather sling can't be beat. The Africase look great, but I just don't like the flap getting in the way. jorge

What a shock!

I have used the Uncle Mike's carriers for two safaris, not realizing that they were junk.

I am so embarrassed.

The sad part is that they worked great. But now I guess I'll have to throw them away when I get home.....

Rick.

Rusty, Where did you purchase the belt? Is the elastic suitable for use on smaller cartridges like 7 and 9.3X64?
Thanks, Bob
