While on safari last week in Maasailand I heard the President of Tanzania has declared parts or all of the Selous as a National Park and that, as such, hunting will not be allowed. Hate to lose the opportunities there. Anyone from the country have more detail to help clarify?

Also heard the NP was going to be renamed.

Hi Bwana

The northern part (north of Rufiji system) is to be declared a National Park it seems. Not a major deal as more than 50% of it is already designated for non hunting anyway. Maybe 4 or 5 blocks that are presently for hunting may fall into the new Park but no more. With Pasanisi closing there are quite a few hunting blocks in the Selous unleased as it stands so I don't foresee any major loss to the hunting in the Selous. We hear the Park will be named after Tz founding father Nyerere. Also note that TANAPA who operate National Parks are a very definite cut above TAWA who run hunting game reserves, so good for conservation in general.

As far as corridor talk goes, the entire area North of the Rufiji which has been a photographic area for some time is going to be confirmed as a National Park named after the founding President.

The Southern (largest) part of the Selous is still a hunting reserve though an area closer to the eventual dam has been demarcated to act as a buffer zone, affecting the blocks in that section.

On a different note, Green Miles has lost its hunting rights in Lake Natron.

I hadn’t heard about Green Mike. The Saga continues. When did this happen?

Tanzania: 'You Are Safe', Government Tells Wildlife Officials

8 AUGUST 2019

The Citizen (Dar es Salaam)

By Frank Kimboy

Dar es Salaam — Deputy Minister of natural resources and tourism Costantine Kanyasu has allayed fears by the Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA) about the safety of their employment following the decision to turn the upper part of Selous Game Reserve into a national park.

The decision was made by President John Magufuli about 20 days ago, when he was laying a foundation stone for the construction of the Stiegler's Gorge hydropower project in Ruaha delta.

The President directed the ministry of natural resources and tourism to re-demarcate the Selous Game Reserve to establish a national park, which will be named after Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The lower part according to the President will retain its current status as game reserve.

The minister made the assurance, while addressing Tawa officials from Maguruwe and Liwale game reserves.

Some of officials asked the deputy minister about the security of their employment following the President's decision.

Some of the officials, who spoke during the meeting, claimed that government's decision to raise the status of game reserves into national parks is weakening Tawa.

However, the deputy minister said that Tawa will continue to exist despite the government decision to demarcate Selous game reserve.

"Tawa, which was established to manage game reserve and wet lands, was established under the country's laws and it will continue to exist," said Mr Kanyasu.

The deputy minister, however said, the ministry plans to advise the President to look at the possibility of enabling Tawa to manage national parks, which are established due to the decision to upgrade game reserves into a national parks.

Recently the government upgraded Biharamulo, Burigi and Kimisi game reserves into Chato-Burigi national park.

"If our proposals isn't endorsed we will request the President to direct Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) to set aside funds, which will enable Tawa to operate," said the minister in a statement.

Interesting developments to be sure. Thanks for clarifying. I can see some positives in this, especially if the blocks weren't currently being used as wildlife will be protected in the NP. I guess we will see how this progresses. In the meantime I will check on the status of a Selous buff hunt I have planned in 2021.
