I suppose the Gir Forest in India could be named a place where tigers and lions live together, but I don´t think there are tigers there. The union between a lion and a tigress produces a most interesting hybrid, a ligon. There is the biggest cat of them all, 12 feet or more and weight in accordance.

Blackbearhunter/Nainital,

India has tigers and lions but there are no tigers in Gir. The tigons, Ligers, Litigers etc were zoo developed cross breeds and the Alipore Zoo in Calcutta was responsible for these experiments. None of them existed in nature.

I understand that a number of experts went to court to stop this experimentation and it has been stopped and the animals are being allowed to die out slowly.

Good hunting!

Thanks for the reply,I had seen one on tv. and had not heard anything about them and just knew someone on here would get me up to date.
Thanks,I thought they were hybryids but not sure.if they were allowed to mate i wonder if there offspring would go back to one or the other gene?Since you know about india, was there a boy raised by animals like in the jungle book story?Or is it a myth?I think i saw a show about that also in your part of the world. Also two sisters were found to be wild in the old days?Any knowledge of these people?I think one died quite early and the other lived to be middle age or somthing like that?Very interesting stories that i think are true/documented?
Thanks again! thumb

They did have one at the Salt Lake City zoo that they admit was a cross developed in the zoo. It died years ago and is stuffed.

Black leopards (panthers) and spotted leopards are the same animals, just with different colour due to excess of pigmentation, so from two spotted leopards a black one can born, specially in India, not know why this is not so common in Africa.

Black and spotted cats also are common between our jungle cats, from the little ones to the big ones (jaguars).

These things were just in the news last week, some "safari" park in Florida, had a female tiger and a male lion "accidentally", breed.

Well Iam going to go ahead an blow everyone away with this one.I heard a couple years back that- russia/bad guys- was doing expermints on tigers and people or something like Dr.morrows island and had in fact invented a tiger lion something crossbreed whatever and that it had escaped and was a super predetor and couldnt be caught. They have been trying to keep it a secrete from the public and it was a war/weapon type deal/animal.Since the cloneing stuff on the news and supposedly cloning a human baby, there is no telling whats been cloned and crossed in the ussr/badguys behind close doors?Anywhere else for that matter. That Dr.marrow test tube-stuff is for real,we just dont hear about it.I think i heard on the evening news and then they just hushed it up.Did anyone else hear this rumer about 3-4yr.back?I see alot of this stuff on the science/learning channel about the test tube embriosuff.Various news. Why couldnt a clone of something be made if they are doing it to humans, what would be strange about a tiger?I dont get it?Who watch dogs this sorta stuff? What has been bred so far that is far and away from original?Pit bulls and fresh water strippers?Tame wolfs and guinnea pigs?Frankly I think you guys would love to hunt saber tooth tigers ,wooly mammoths, irish elk and T.Rex!I think the rhino needs brought back to a larger population so they can be hunted again more.Tiger too.Oh yea national geogriphic said they were going to try to clone the wooly mammooth!Anyone see that?

These cats can get up to 900 lbs. as this picture from off the net shows. They usually have faint stripes but look more like a big lion.

This is a picture my son took of a breeding cage for ligers while on a business trip for me to the Heilongjiang province in northeast China. It shows a lion and tiger in the same cage.

This area is in the far northeast section of China. It is bordered by Mongolia, Russia and North Korea.

The tiger raising facility is near Halin City and is called the Siberia Tiger Park. They were raising the pure Siberians also.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

About 10 or 12 years ago there was a private zoo in Pocatello Idaho raising lions, tigers and ligers. In fact it was called Ligertown if I remember correctly. It was a a rag-tag operation and some of the cats got lose. The fish and game department and sheriffs deputies had to go in and capture the cats. Several had to be shot when they charged. The owners were prosecuted. It appears to be an easy cross to accomplish. Black leopards, ocelots etc. are rare but just a color phase of these cats much like a brown black bear.

The town was actually Soda Springs, ID and Ligertown was about a mile behind my sisters house. The couple running the joint were beyond freaks. The woman had her teeth filed to match a cats teeth and also had tattoos and and other alterations to make her look like a cat.

They actually brought in the Idaho National Guards helicopters to track down the 2 dozen or so cats that escaped. The night vision and thermal sights worked very well to help find the cats. The same sighting systems also showed that there were 3 times the number of mountain lions in the surrounding area than the ID F&G dept. claimed were there.

All of the escaped cats were either shot or captured without incident but it made for a few hectic days in the area.

It was discovered that the cats were poorly fed and living in terrible conditions.

I saw a mounted liger at the Reno convention two years ago. It was basically immense! You'd need a big trophy room to put it in and a big pair to face one down if it charged you.

I saw several tigons & ligers at the Alipore Zoo in Calcutta in 80's. Some of them were 2nd & 3rd generation.

There have been a few cases of children living with wolves in the wild. Attempt were made to 'civilize' two wolf children without sucess, they would growl if the doctors got close to them.

A grand aunt of mine in the old days visited two children in West Bengal who I think were being looked after by missionaries. Both these children showed all the sign of wolf behavior, they ran on all fours, ate raw meat & would howl at night.
