Oh, you nonbelievers. I've hunted with nothing but a handgun since 1978. Did the Dangerous Seven plus another 40+ plainsgame, 2 brown bear, elk, moose. I can equal any rifle with my handguns.
On the other hand, I respect people that know their limitations!

And I 'm sure your PH was unarmed? Or perhaps he had a large caliber DG rifle along for back-up?

That is only a consideration if the longarm is actually used.

Hi Matt,

If you're saying what I think you are, I disagree. The confidence to go afield with a handgun for DG is only possible, knowing if the vigaro hits the mixmaster, you're covered.

As far as handgun hunting for DG goes, I am just guessing here but, I bet he is using a TC or equivalent.

To me, a handgun is not a short rifle. A handgun, in my world would be defined by the cartridge. It would need to be generally considered a traditional handgun chambering to qualify.

With all due respect,I disagree with this statement.
I've had 44mag pistols & a 44mag rifle & numerous 22 pistols & rifles.
Same calibers, but definitely different firearms & the larger the caliber the less accurate I was with the pistols.

I really think we are in agreement here. What I am referring to are the scoped TC's in rifle chambering's like a .270 or a .300 Win mag.

I have a difficult time defining that as a handgun. It is simply a rifle with no stock. While more difficult to shoot long and accurately as a rifle in the same caliber, it is still way more capable than a "typical" handgun.

I have zero issues with guys hunting with them, just don't think they should go into the same record category as a revolver in .44 or .357 or the like.

It would be like allowing a crossbow into the archery books. Crossbows are fine, they are just not traditional archery.

I hunted with Don Heath a few times and he always carried either a S&W 41 or 44 mag. He provided me with a S&W 329 and a nice Zim Police marked S&W 66 to pack on a couple of hunts I did with him when there was a bit of warvet activity in the areas we had to travel through. I hunted with Juan Pozzi in Argentine and he carried a Glock 22 and provided a Glock for me as well. Juan used his Glock to finish a zombie fox I "killed" and that came back to life during a photo session. The PHs I have hunted with in RSA did not carry pistols, but always had 1911s, HiPowers or Glocks in the hunting trucks.

I used to carry a pistol on every hunt, but quit doing so a several years ago. However, the past couple of years I have wished I had one to take small game or finish downed big game. It is much less messy than a close range center fire rifle finisher when you are up close.

Back to the original question....Handguns on African PHs....yes, if you don't have a rifle handy a handgun will suffice.

Seriously, the only PH I recall with a handgun was on my first hunt in South Africa. A cameramen on a hunt I was on in Tanzania carried a revolver. If there were others, it didn't leave an impression.

Perry,

I bought a Taurus Judge for NA hunting. I like the dual capability and use the .45 for finishing game and the .410 is nice in case of running into slithering things.

It seems that Don Heath considered a handgun serious thing .
Dr Don Heath, ex-National Parks, and Superintendent Charlie Haley, then officer commanding, Forensics Ballistics for the police worked out a plan with National Parks, the Zimbabwe Professional Hunters’ and Guides’ Association, and the Zimbabwe Shooting Sport Federation whereby the shooting exam would take place separately, and would be offered twice each year. A set format was devised, consisting of four separate shooting exercises for the learner PH’s, and a handgun exercise for those going for the Guide’s license. Bianchi-style targets were adopted, and the shoots are run on a score-divided-by-time model as is done in IPSC Practical Pistol competition. Making use of the Federation’s dedicated ranges in Harare and Bulawayo allows for the presence of qualified instructors and gunsmiths, chronographs and CED electronic timers, and the shoot results are calculated using the Practical Pistol MSS computer programme. Cleveland Pistol Club in Harare also has ammunition reloading facilities for heavy rifles and runs regular heavy rifle competitions which allow learners to get in more range time.

I hunted with one PH that carried a pistol.

A client once asked "what do you plan to stop with that?"

"An argument," he replied. Wink

...a very famous PH-Teacher in SA allways carried a firearm, mostly an clock 9 mm (Version I) with black tallon bullets.
On hunting or not...

A PH / landowner in camp during my first safari (Limpopo) carried a sidearm at all times. Never got the idea that it was for game animals though.

Without being melodramatic or to sketch a gloomy picture, landowners need to be careful for the two legged predators that are often praying on defenceless farmers here in the sunny rainbow country. It pays to be vigilant and in mode ,is it now red or orange, all the time.

I personally never even go to the shooting range without a side arm.

As fare as side arm in the bush, I tend to agree with the "tits" theory.
