And especially with any of the more exotic calibres. As you know reloading something like a 30-378 does not cost much more than reloading a 30-06.

Apart from the odd exception from time to time the only factory ammo I have seen that will give reloads a run for their money is Wby ammo fired in Wby rifles. But even then you are still at the mercy of different lotts for common point of impact as well as getting the same bullet weight and type as the last lot you bought.

But the keen reloader does end spending a lot more because he fiddles about with more rifles and scopes etc. I think the keen reloader is a guns/ammo nut who also happens to go hunting and the factory ammo user is a hunter who happens to use a rifle as his tool.

Yes to each their own. That's what makes AR interesting. No offense to any of you reloaders, but I have been around three separate hunting instances where reloads didn't come through at a critical time in the hunt, including my first safari when my hunting partner had to finally borrow my factory ammo because of problems with his reloads. I'll be sticking with my roomful of rock botton/bargain priced factory ammo like safari-lawyer (now aka "factory ammo user"). Big Grin

OK, I'll admit it. I reload because I am a gun crank. There is a lot of room here under the AR Big Tent. Some of us are gun cranks and hunters, some one and not the other. It's not like those of us that reload are morally superior to those that don't. We do have a few extra tools, though.
You can get really good bread from a bakery. Some people like to make home made bread because it gives them pleasure to make something really good.
Reloads are made to save money when volume shooting. Hand loads are like artisan bread. Not everyone that likes artisan bread needs to bake, but those that do would congregate on a web site with a name like "Accurate Baking."

By the way, I like to find out about good deals on factory ammo. It's not like I don't eat store bought bread, too. I bought four boxes of Hornady 470 NE for $60 each on a close out. You can bet I snarfed those up in a New York Minute.

I've also been reloading for something like 30 odd years and never had a problem. I've enjoyed loading every round, it's cheaper and more accurate. I also don't ever use cheap bullets.

Does that make me a snob? _ I really don't know and what's more, I really don't care but I do know that usually when I shoot, my life and others are (very often) on the line and I'd rather trust them to my reloads than to a factory load.

As for motorbikes..... I've been riding and sometimes racing them for 41 years now but have fallen off of several so I guess that makes me a better reloader than biker! rotflmo

Yeah, great comparison. I've also had two friends killed on motorcycles and one lose his leg. You're absolutely right-I'll keep watching! Big Grin

I bought a box of Hornady ammo recently offline and opened it up to find R-P stamped on the brass... hmm, something, I say, something is amiss...

If I get trampled or mauled, LionHunter and GerryPeters375 can have the 50 or so boxes of 416, 458, 375, and 338 that I've accumulated. Come to think of it, I'll even be backed up by a PH that shoots off the shelf ammo. I guess we're both screwed.

You don't know what you are missing!

Hunting with ammo you have loaded yourself makes the hunt that more enjoyable, and you are still considered part of sane lot.

Some of us, though, haver crossed the divide and have gone on the other side.

Just imagine. Dreaming up your own wildcat, building your own rifle, making your own bullets.

Now you are really considered one of the real brainless nuts!

Especially by those who keep telling you that one day you will get stomped, tore apart, trampled to death because of some mistake you have made in your production.

I'm too cheap not to reload.

When I bought my 416 Rigby, the only option was $120/box factory.

I can reload a bunch of cartridges for 120 bucks.

I admire blokes like Factory Ammo User, hunting around for deals, unknown lots of ammo and generally getting their rifle going with ammo restrictions.

All too hard for me Smiler
