Your best bet would be to wait until the Dallas Safari Club where you can compare all the different models. See how they all compare to one another.

If you go to Cabelas in Ft. Worth, you can look at the Merkel, Kreighoff and Blaser in their fine gun room.

I have never been in the fine gun room of Cabelas.

I do not think any of these would have a Searcy, but you could at least find out what you like or dislike.

You can go to Cabela's on line and check out the gun room in each store to see what they have in thei inventory.

I don't think Cabelas stocks Searcy doubles, although an occasional used Searcy shows up at Cabelas. Last I checked, Ivory Beads (http://www.ivorybeads.com) had a Searcy. Other than that, they are a special order item. But you can see then at SCI and place an order if you like what you see.

Thanks for the advice guys. This will be my 4th double rifle, so I've seen all those refrenced.

Don't want to wait to SCI to see one, as I'd like to get it ordered in the next couple of weeks.

500grains, I remember seeing that gun online... I checked yesterday and it's gone now.

I live in Dallas and am also looking for a double. But this will be my first! Is Searcy the way to go? I would like to keep prices reasonable, so that takes H&H out of the mix.

Mauser I was in the Fort Worth store a week ago, and they had a 500NE Merkel, two Krieghoffs, ? chambering, and a Blazer 470NE, in the GUN Library, all the rifles there are used! Of those on hand there, the 500NE Merkel is the only one I'd even consider!

I have two Merkel double rifles,a 140-2,470NE and a 140-1, 9.3X74R, and they handle more like the Britt doubles, than the other two brands! The only draw back to the Merkel 500NE is the Safari 140-2s ,500NE, 470NE, 416 Rigby, and 375 H&H, only come with extractors. I like it that way, but some don't! My 140-1 9.3X74R has sel ejectors.

New_Guy I don't know anyone in the D/FW area who owns a Searcy, but if you haven't handled one in the last couple years, you will be pleasently surprised. I handled the PH model made for Ray Atkinson last year,at the DSC show, and it handled very closely to my 500/450 Westley Richards, but then so does my 470NE Merkel Safari. The thing is, the Searcy PH rifle fit me well, and that makes all the difference in the way a double feels! The PH models are slimmed down considerably, and I'd have no qualms in ordering one from Butch, if I weren't already double rifle poor! In fact I'm in the process of buying another 9.3X74R O/U double now.

I live about 4 hrs north of Dallas. I have a 470 Deluxe grade and would be more than willing to let you shoot if you like. It is set up for LH shooting however it still works fine for those of you who shoot on the wrong side! Shoot me a PM if you would like to make the trip.

I agree 100%, I played with all their doubles a few weeks ago and the Merkel was far and above the best fit and feel. After comparing these guns side by side, the Kreighoff and the Blaser were quickly eliminated from what I would ever consider.

When you held the Merkel, you could fool yourself into thinking you were holding an H&H or another fine English double. Couldn't do that with the Blaser or Kreighoff.

Just me though, some people probably prefer the Kreighoff or Blaser. I do have to say the Blaser came up and pointed well for me. I just had trouble getting over the "Eifel Tower like" front sight.

Butch will be at my table and Johan Calitzs table at Dallas and his new double rifle on the smaller frame (about 20 gage size) in 375 and 450-400 will be on display..One of the display rifles in 450-400 is destined to come home with me, by hook or by crook...

In todays rifles, I shot them all and I settled on the Searcy...I just got mine back from Butch and he took about a pound of wood out of the grip and trimmed the stock for me, I have a big hand but short fingers..While he had it he gave it another rust blue and of course the stock had been redone completely...nice touch, no bill, and thats what I call customer service...

After having shot English guns all my life, I have really enjoyed my Searcy, its the best gun I have ever owned in every respect..its more accurate, stronger, shoots about every load I have worked up for it to the same POI, It is my idea of the perfect "hunting take to the field rifle", I always worried about my English guns and never could enjoy them, worried about the airlines, worried about camp staff and PHs carrying them, worried about losing them..I don't worry anymore, I can insure it and if its lost, I'll tell Butch to make another....

Anyone know the differences between the old "Field Grad" model and the new "PH" model?

The field grade and the PH model are both an Anson & Deeley type action. But the PH model is a bit slimmer/trimmer, has better engraving and has a few other embellishments that were not found on the field grade.

You should give Butch a call, tell him you are interested in one of his guns, but would like to check one out before dropping the $$$.

Ask him if he knows of a "cool" customer from the Dallas area that may be able to help you.

Can't hurt to ask...

Ray,
Any more details on the samller frame that Butch is using. I spoke to him several months ago about a 450-400 and he said the action was not muck different than those that he uses on the 470. Did you finally talk him into producing a smaller action? I too would like to see a smaller/lighter action to have a smaller caliber big bore made. I guess I will have to make plans to attend the Dallas show!

Thank you for the information. I was aware that Cabela's Gun Room carried mostly used firearms. I suggested Cabela's as I thought new_guy had a specific price range to stay whithin. I haven't looked at Cabela's in the ast several weeks, but didn't they used to have a listing at the begining of the rifle section for new Searcy's on an order basis?

Atkinson, Ray
How do you like the 450/400? I have been considering a double in this caliber also. I like the idea of a slimer receiver and 9 1/2 pounds! I have never owned a double in this caliber, but from everything I have read about the caliber, it seems to be the best answer for one gun to handle everything. Big enough for DG and still light enough to carry for plains game!

I spoke to Butch yesterday re: 450/400 frame.

He says it's the same frame as for the 375... it is about 1/4" narrower than the 470 and about 1/8" shorter.
