Boggs’ big-game furor: Hall of Famer’s hunting prowess upsets activists
By Dave Wedge
Thursday, January 6, 2005

Newly elected Hall of Famer Wade Boggs made millions hitting baseballs but now spends tens of thousands killing scores of exotic animals - including some critics charge are ``threatened'' species - as a member of an elite safari club.

Boggs has been honored with a ``Diamond Grand Slam'' by the Safari Club International for gunning down 70 animals, including lions, hippopotamuses, zebras, bears, crocodiles, buffaloes and leopards during international hunting trips, mostly in Africa.

Among Boggs' acknowledged kills: a leopard during a trip to Tanzania and Mozambique. Leopards are listed as ``threatened'' on the U.S. Department of Fisheries and Wildlife's endangered species list.

``He's a pretty vile individual contrary to his deity status in baseball,'' said animal rights activist Bob MacKay.

Boggs could not be reached for comment.

But he told the St. Petersburg Times, ``The hippo had killed three villagers and the crocodile had killed two kids, so I was sort of the Great White Hunter who came in and saved the village. In Tanzania, I was chasing a lion that was killing cattle, and they wanted me to kill the lion. So I was doing a service for these people and getting these animals out of there that they're not allowed to touch.''

Boggs' wife, Debbie, also was honored by SCI for her kills.

Other SCI members include retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former Seattle Seahawks owner Kenneth Behring and former President George H.W. Bush.

The group has come under fire for lobbying against animal protection laws and endorsing ``canned'' hunting trips targeting penned-in exotic animals.

SCI members maintain they are ``wildlife conservationists'' and often donate trophies to museums. SCI director Rick Parsons did not return a phone call last night.

But Stephanie Boyles of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said, ``It's pretty much become the rule that if you've got the money you can kill any animal you want in the world.''

As hunters we should not have to justify ourselves to anyone. These friggin' anti-hunting people need to realize that hunting is an essential part of managing the ecosystems on our planet. I never hear them complaining about how many people ate the animals killed on safari. So unless they are willing to belly up some of the funds they use to try to stop people from hunting for a better cause, then they should shut the hell up and watch us shoot.

WEll

Maybe those activist people Bob MacKay & Stephanie Boyles might take a trip to Zimbabwe and see what the poachers and other undesirables have done to the wildlife over there, or do they only practice selective morality ...

They might one day consider an article on the ravages of poaching and indiscriminate slaughter of rare species in Africa to meet the demand of the RICH middle men of the world whom profit from the illegal trade in rare species.

Good luck to those hunters whom have made the trips to Africa, promoted wildlife conservation by ethical hunting, satisfied their dreams, helped the outfitters, and cared for the lesss fortunate people whom benefit from safari hunting. How about telling the world about what SCI has done and is doing with the BLUE BAG cause wherby hunters have helped communities in desparate need in Africa for medical equipment and drugs, or are people NOT on their agenda

Aint it great that we can all have our say in this world. To those activisits I say, have a Happy New Year.

Regards, Peter

WTF is a "Diamond Grand Slam"? I don't know of any such SCI award? Can't this reporter get any details correct?

It would have to be accompanied with a bounty as I doubt they're very good table fare.
