Hi,

This may sound like an absurd question, but I have an opportunity (mandate, actually) to go to RSA sometime in the May time-frame. It is possible I may be able to grab a few days (literally) to do a *little* hunting. Is it totally unreasonable to be able to get a warthog in that time? Any other species?

Can be done, depending what animals you have in mind, and the area you would like to hunt. Try to give us a fe more details.

That is a really good few days. Me and my dad did 4 days in Bots on a side trip after visiting family and got a Zebra, Impala and a Steenbuck. The short hunts aren't as nice as a longer one but if its all you can do then its much better then not going.

Dan,
My brother and I had one of our most memorable hunts in RSA for three days in 2001. He wanted to take a vaal rehbok and I wanted to take a white and black springbok. We were taking out wives on a sightseeing tour to include Vic Falls and Kruger Park. We booked three days with Chappie and Marilyn Scott (Scott of Africa) at their place in the Winterberg. They arranged for us to stay in a redecorated homestead next to them that is used as a B&B during the Spring rose trail season, only this was in June during the peak of the winter.

We had six inches of snow and it turned the house and garden into a Zhavago like wonderland. It was incredible. Unfortunately, it was too cold for the girls to accompany us on our daily hunts, but they enjoyed curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book and hot chocholate.

My brother got a killer vaal rehbok, and I took my springboks with a steinbok as a kicker. A short but successful hunt. Anything is possible IF YOU ASK. Kudude

Dan,

When and where will you be in RSA?

It is fairly easy to get around the country but it does chew up valuable hunting time.

The when of the business part of the trip is (mm/dd) 05/06-05/11. I can take 3 days at either end. Worst part of it (at the moment) I do not know what city it is in... I'm not sure the people arranging it have made up their minds yet.

6" snow? What weather could I expect? (I ask this noting we have had 3x's the regular snow by this time, and are running 20degF below normal since late nov).

If you are easy with a ranch hunt we can look after you for plains game, no problem at all.

If you want to ALSO loan rifle/ammo that is OK as we have suitable rifle/s as required

Only problem is ... you would need to find your way to Pietersburg/Polokwane airport in Limpopo Province and from there you would be in our care. Pietersburg airport is about a 1-hr flight from JIA on a SA Airlink small plane

Hi Dan,

If you go to the Limpopo Province you won't experience snow. I have some nice properties about 4 hours north of Joburg, we can accomodate you as well. You'll need to think about what animals you would be interested in though as some species do not occur everywhere.

If you really want a nice kudu, red hartebeest, wildebeest, eland, we have them.

You got it. Six inches! And we have had snow everytime I've visited Chappie. June is their December and our average altitude was 5500'. In four trips, I have had six inches twice. This is why you check with folks who have been on the trip you are taking before you go. They kept us from freezing our buns off on the first trip. I'll never forget my brother asking me before we left why we were taking all this heavy stuff to Africa.

RSA is a large country and hunting opportunities abound. You can reach very good hunting areas in a short time from all the major cities, many by car. I'd do a search for outfitters in the area of the country you are visiting. Kudude

Dan,
I have done it with Wink, AR member 2 months ago. We had 3 full days of hunting and he took a jackal, a Rowland Ward Waterbuck and a Eland. That was the species he was after.

It all depends on the outfitter if he is prepared to do a short trip. I am prepared to do it.

Read Wink's "short 3 day hunt on page 2 of African hunting reports

Dan, send me a PM if you need any additional information on my 3 day hunt in October. You may have already read my hunting report but if it leaves any questions unanswered I am available to fill in the gaps.

John,

I've never heard anyone talk about snow in Limpopo. Just this past season, when it was supposed to be cold, it was over 100 degrees F every day! Eeker

Its been very informative. Some of the info I'll need to actually give details are not in my hands yet: like where will I be visiting in RSA? My boss hasn't told me yet.

Anyway -- will know more soon. I also likely will have some strange requests when I get there... I'd like to learn something about the animal(s) I'm hunting. If that means fewer animals, that's OK.

A part of me would like to look for warthogs -- in honor of Walter!

Don't be surprised if you get PM'd by Ray Atkinson. He stopped posting for some reason.

The replies I read above offer an answer to the short time frame hunt possibility asked by a man wishing to hunt Africa. Who could provide a more direct answer than those who are in the business of arranging hunts? I would much prefer to read statements of opportunities and flexible hunt accommodations than the criticism offered by the naysayers.

Marv, I didn't take them too negatively. The response will take a while to dig through. It is a hard thing to do quickly.

I have been waiting to hear what city. It is mustly up to a woman named Himla who is a geneticist interested in using nrY and mtDNA to track human migrations, specializing in Africans. So -- wherever she sets up this meeting is where I'll have to travel from to meet whomever I contract with.

Next item: I have spoken to my physician, who has provided scrips for malaria profolaxis and typhus, but didn't get rabies (CDC recommends that -- I told my Dr I wanted to "get out," but I'm not sure it registered completely). I already have Hep A and B vaccinations.

Speaking of which, my Dr. just got some dogs from RSA (some type of mastif that is good natured). The folks he dealt with conversationally informed him that there were significant numbers of forced invasions, robberies, etc... while he wasn't sure this would affect tourists, I am curious as to whether this is an ongoing problem in RSA?

I've also picked up some shooting sticks...

Is it possible to bring back meat and import it to the US?

Dan

Boerboels? Neat sounding dogs, but I have only met a Ridgeback/Boerboel mix.

I rode back on the plane with someone whose family had this happen, and I read on another board of a PH this happened to. It is apparently real, though how bad I do not know (it does happen here too).

I do not think so.

Boerboel is exactly right.

It happens here -- not very often. My Dr. said it happened rather much more frequently than here (no specific #'s -- just what he picked up from his Boerboel breeder).

I'll have to eat it there, then.
