I like to wear chukka-type (5") boots for most hunting that doesn't involve really cold weather or climbing and I've run across two that look like they might work for me. I like fairly ltwt boots with soles that aren't board-stiff.

#1) H.S.Trask Deer Camp Chukka - bison hide.

#2) Danner Sharp-Tail Chukka

I'm leaning toward the H.S. Trask, does anyone have any experience with either of these.

As per the "Outdoor Life Product Review" theme of picking boots Smiler on AR, I found the Sharptail Chukkas big and clumsy. I thought they would be the berries, but eventually threw both pairs in the trash.

DB Bill ----- Go to your nearest backpacking store and buy one of the better pairs of backpacking boots, wear them enough to break them in and go hunting. Yes,the soles are going to be stiffer than the Chukkas, but on those 15 mile Buffalo trekes your feet will thank you in the end. By the time your feet wallow around in the looser Chukkas and your feet blister on top of blisters, you will realize the reason for good fitting, stiffer boots. When I say break-in I don't mean a stroll once or twice a week, I mean at least 5 mile hikes three times weekly. If you do it right you will have fewer problems. Also carry some moleskin with you on the hunting trip. Last but not least is get some Polyproplylene liner socks or Smartwool liner socks with Smartwool boot socks, take these with you to buy the boots and you will get the best fit. wave Good luck and good shooting.

I agree with phurley and Will. Take the chukkas along if you want for around camp, but on a hunt it is not uncommon to have to run to get ahead of an animal and the long treks over bad terrain are not kind to loose fitting footwear. I wore Irish Setter softpaws kangaroo leather 6" boots last year, loved em. Lighter in weight than most chukka's but good support, etc.

When you are but fifty feet from a beast that can stomp you into a mudpuddle or shred you into fajitas, rest assured he will have your UNDIVIDED attention!! www.aahsomeafricanadventures.com safariman416@hotmail.com

DB,
I hunt the Selous and Zimbabwe in Chuckas or Tennis shoes canvas/leather walking type,..Heck most PHs wear low cut deck shoes and no socks....

My favorite shoe is the Ropers horseshoes for walking they can't be beat...

Guess we're are the only ones that wade water while hunting buffalo....Last time I waded in the high grass korongos in boots I almost ruined my feet and they weighed a ton wet...thats year Saeed went under but Pierre got his gun barrel and pulled him up, his tennis shoes and closthes dried in 15 minutes....

Heavy hunting boots have a place but not IMO for hunting Buffalo. If the bulls go into the hills, the walking type tennys still work well for me...

Oh I forgot the Trask should be a very nice boot. I would have to have a arch support I suspect, much the same as with any shoe I wear as I have heel spurs.I have been looking at them also, but never tried them as yet...

They seem to be kin to the Courtney Selous boots, and I sure do like Courtneys, I wear my inserts and heavy wool socks with them and they dry quickly after a wade, the thin leather and wool make easy walking when wet...

What about those flip-flops made out of used truck tires that the black dudes wear?
