I will be hunting plains game in SA next year, and will have only one gun, which is a 7mm Rem Mag. Primary animals hunted will be Kudu, Wilderbeast, and Impala. I'm interested in recommendations, based on your experiences, regarding best factory loads. Thanks.

If Remington still makes the load with Swift A-Frame bullets then that would be worth considering. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I used the same caliber in Namibia and Zimbabwe. It is more than enough for what you want. Use 160gr swift a-frames, partitions, or accubonds. Stay away from X bullets and ballistic tips....too hard, and too soft!!

Here's a link to the Remington site: http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/centerfire/premier_a-Frame.asp Nickel plated cases, 160 grain A-Frame bullets, what more could you want? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I like 160 or 175 grain bullets for the animals you mention, and have had good luck on a variety of game with Trophy Bonded Bear Claws and Nosler Partitions. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Use the heaviest premium bullet available. High velocity is not needed and, in fact, can be counter-productive. If you hand load, full length size and run each round through the magazine before departing. Take at least 40 rounds. I used this caliber on my first safari, and promptly bought a 375 when I returned. It's OK, not great. You WILL have a great time.

I like prelium bullets, however the TSX Barnes is in my opinion more destructive then others.. My vote for 160gr Barnes TSX Mike

While my preference is definitely the Barnes TSX, the truth is that any premium bullet in factory loads will work for the game you have selected. I have also had great results with the Nosler partitions. Best advice is to use whichever premum bullet shoots best in your rifle. Avoiding the very light, "varmit" weights, of course. Use medium to heavy for caliber bullets - i.e, 150-160-175 grains. If you are shooting better than 2" groups at 100 yards, you won't be blaming the bullet or the rifle caliber. For the plains game you have mentioned, you will be in fine shape with a 7mm. Enjoy! Bill

Mike, err, Mr Mayor You have much more African experience than me, as I've only shot 14 non-DG animals with the Barnes X bullet; 225gr .338's and 85gr .257's. It looked to me that you could almost eat up to the bullet hole, except for the little steenbok which was more like scrapple in a skin casing! In any event, as you can't bring meat home with you in any way, shape or form, why would you care if the bullet did extra muscle damage as long as you got your trophy? No flame here, just curious.

Go to the Cabela's or midway site, order 3 to 4 differnt boxes of 160 to 175 grn premium bullets, fire some test groups, pick the ones that best shoot in your gun. Do not shoot 1 group then the next group. Shoot shot 1 of group 1, shot 1 of group 2, shot 1 of group 3 etc to eliminate the fouling advantage of the first brand ammo you select. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I'd agree with Mike. My brother shoots a 7mmRM, and he has used the Federal Premium bullets with great success. There are several really good choices in factory loads, Federal, Rem, Hornady, Nosler. I'd check Midway USA on the web and see what they have available. Kudude

I agree with Mike too with this addition. The trophy bonded bear claw loaded by federal has never failed. Ive taken animals from 50-400 yards and it just works ever time if I do my job. Its been a hell of a party Woodrow
