Federal .308 Win 165 gr TBBC on Kudu, etc.?

My son, 14, and I are going to Namibia for plains game in June/July. He is a very adequate shot with his .308 Winchester in a Tikka T3 but that's all the level of recoil I want him to handle at this time. The largest game we plan on shooting will be Kudu or Gemsbok.

Has anyone used .308 165 gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws on plains game? If so, what was your opinion of the bullet performance? Thanks.

I have not used that particular bullet, but it is of a proven design and it should work to perfection baring human error..Todays bullets are the best ever, and bullet failure is the exception rather than the rule, kudos to the bullet makers....

If I wanted more penetration however then I would opt for the 165 gr. Nosler, one that I have used extensively in my .308..

Not that I'm for long shots....I'm not....but the terrain is supposed to be quite open in the area we're going to be in. My son can EASILY place every shot in an 8 inch pie plate at 300 yds using sticks, no wind. Are you suggesting the 200 yard limit because of the bullet design or the caliber?

I'm all for penetration, do you think the Nosler Partition is a better choice? Perhaps TSXs? I happen to have a couple of boxes of the Fed Factory TBBCs on hand but can buy or reload anything.

You should have no concerns about that combo. Kudu are not that difficult to kill. Gemsbok can be another matter, but a well placed shot and both are toast. Speer has just released a new bullet along the TBBC line; the Trophy Bonded Tipped. However, if your Sons rifle shoots the TBBC accurately out to 300 yards, I wouldn't change. Be sure you both understand shot placement on African plains game, as their vitals differ from our big game.

I've killed tons of game with the .308 and 165 gr. 165 TBBCs, including full-grown eland bulls, wildebeest, kudu, and gemsbok. Most were shot at "normal" ranges, but I dropped one gemsbok within a few steps of where it stood at the shot at 265 yards, and dropped another bull in its tracks at 346. It works just fine as long as you put the bullet in the right place.

If you son is that good, then go for it. My thoughts were caliber, and shooter ability.
