I thought this was interesting. . .

I just returned from my first safari, had a grand time. Was fortunate to kill 11 plains animals. My family and friends followed along on Instagram, where I posted animal pictures and general pictures when we had Wifi. My Instagram is private, only family and friends allowed by me. However, my family and friends shared the pictures with their family and friends . . .

I live in a VERY rural area, and the vast majority of my friends and family are various shades of conservative. . . As are most of their family and friends. . .

I found it funny, that of the 11 animals I killed, the only one that bothered people was the zebra Smiler

So I started asking people, what's the difference between a zebra and a kudu?

Others have said, "I can't believe you could shoot a horse." To which I respond that I've never yet met a horse I didn't want to shoot at one point in time. (and I roped in high school and was very attached to a few different horsesSmiler )

The response hasn't really been negative. More lukewarm to the zebra.

I just thought it was interesting.

I knew better than to post some pics. I didn't kill a baboon or vervet, but I knew that if I did, I wasn't posting those pictures. I was just really surprised about the zebra. But it was also really the only thing besides a warthog that people actually knew what the animal was.

Interesting

I dealt with same things here in MT
Other hunters asked me how could I shoot zebra
My answer was , they taste just as good as horse Ha Ha
And yes, I used to raise horses as well
Those guys in Botswana called them Disco donkeys , as in Madascar movie
Quite funny

If you get a zebra rug done or mounted they will
all love it . I have some nice critters mounted but the zebra rugs are all any (non hunting) guest talk about.
My old grandfather told me " Boy you shot a stripped donkey" and laughed for 10 minutes

Agreed on the zebra rug. I've shot a butt load of zebra and the vast majority of them were fairly difficult to stalk and shoot. Very skittish, and quick to get on for parts unknown. If fact, if you really want to experience a difficult hunt, try Hartmann's Mountain Zebra on foot in Namibia in the mountain terrain. Big Grin

I got the same response while showing some of my pictures at work when I returned from a safari. As I exited the plane at DFW where I worked at the time, I met a friend and stopped to talk to him. I was showing him some pictures on my video camera and when I came to my zebra a ticket lift lady saw the picture and asked loudly “You shot a zebra! How can you do that?”. I posed as if holding my rifle and said I take very careful aim, and pull the trigger, works every time!

IT was the last animal on my list when I went to Namibia back in 07. Was not even on my list actually. Who would want to shoot a small horse?

Shot a nice Mountain Zebra and it was my favorite hunt, and my favorite mount by far!

I had one on my list for Zim in 2012 as I wanted a Rug. I was the only one (the ONLY one) who wanted a zebra. everyone thought I was nuts for wanting a disco donkey... My group of 5 hunters shot 9 (yes nine) zebra, only one of which was mine!

My Burchell's zebra is a pedestal mount (looks like a giant chess piece) and everyone who visits loves it--even my wife's women friends who don't hunt. Some are probably bunny-huggers but at least they are gracious enough not to make any negative comments.

I think once you get a zebra mounted, or made into a rug, "perceptions" may change . . .

I had the same reaction, "you shot a horse"
I was told that the zebra is a member of the ass family. Not sure if that's true or if the horse is also a part of the ass family.
So I shot another one. And if I go again, I hope to take a third one.
All in all my non hunting friends were cool with the animals I shot in Zim and SA.

I got loads of comments for shooting Zebras. That all stopped after I shot a Giraffe. Now I always get"you shot a Giraffe?".

A zebra wasn't really on my list. But my wife saw the rugs in the lodge, and wanted one. And it was spot and stalk with a bow. VERY wary. A lot of fun to stalk

I'm with you guys and pig feeder too.
It's especially hard for people to conceptualize "why" you would hunt certain animals and I by FAR get the most comments about Giraffe and secondly Zebra.

My girl when she was real young told some kids that she had a Giraffe and a Zebra at home...
The teacher called in my wife and began to tell her that our girl had a very "vivid imagination"... "Your Daughter has been telling the other children that she has a Giraffe and Zebra at home"

My wife broke the news to her that, in fact, she does....she never said they were alive.

Right before my first safari I was dumped by my horse (had them & been a rider since childhood). I had a very sore tail bone on safari. Paybacks when I shot a zebra! Friends didn't ask about all the other game I took, just "how could you shoot a zebra"? My response to this day, after shooting many zebra, is that "when you've been dumping by as many horses as I have, shooting one is finally pay backs!!!"

Best regards, D. Nelson

I got similar responses for shooting a mountain zebra on my Namibia hunt. What really gets people stirred up is when I tell them that the zebra backstrap was the second best meat I ate wile there (second only to springbok). "You ate a horse!?!" "Yes, yes I did. And I loved it!"

Horned critters are considered "game" in the USA, hunted for both sport and meat, whereas horselike creatures normally aren't considered food or game animals.

I think that is also why many people in the USA have a problem with killing the big cats, elephant, hippo, and rhino. They just don't associate those animals with table fare.

Interesting that people don't seem to mind killing crocs too much. I guess there is just something too deadly about those critters. JMO.

I got the same silly responses.
I told them how wary they are & that they are almost all ways in a herd with many eyes & ears to detect danger. It took my second trip to Namibia to get one. (Got a Hartmanns & Burchells)
Plus it was some of the best meat that we got to eat.
Seemed to settle things down considerably.
Got another Burchells in Zim later.
I now have 1 pedestal mount & 2 rugs. Everybody loves the rugs.
