Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just returned from our hunt with Swainson's in Dande North and HHK at Lemco. Hunted with PH Kevin du Boil. Super PH who loves to hunt buffalo on foot - no "diesel stalking" with this guy. Spent 10 days in Dande then 3 days in Lemco.

Tracked 4 duga boys for 9 hours straight one day and picked up their tracks the next morning and tracked for 4 hours. Could never get a shot at the biggest one, so I took this old warrior.




Bumped into a small herd of elephant and took this tuskless cow.


Missed a shot on a 39" sable, but took this zebra on the last day in Dande.

Took a giraffe, two zebra and bush pig in Lemco.

The youngster in giraffe photo is Kevin's son. It was his birthday and we had Kevin bring his wife and son to Lemco. The funniest 4 year old kid you can imagine. Gets his sense of humor from his dad. After a day of hunting, the kid says, "I'm buggered, I need to relax."

The PH estimated the buff's age at between 8 and 10 years old.

Congratulations Terry, looks like you had a great hunt!

That's a fine old dugga boy, buffalo hunting will be next on the agenda for Holly and me.

What will you do with the giraffe? I understand the skin makes a wonderful rug. But I have also heard that they are VERY susceptible to hair slippage. They say the thickness of the skin makes it difficult to get the salt to penetrate completely.

Give us the details on rifle(s) and ammo, etc

I used my Biesen .416 Rem Mag on the buffalo, elephant and giraffe. Used my Biesen .375 H&H on all the rest. Used Federal Sledgehammer solids and Remington Swift A-Frames in the .416 and Remington Swift A-Frames in the .375 (all factory loaded ammunition).

I made a lot of good shots on this safari - I know, surprised me also . Did have a complete miss on a sable. At about 90 yards, he was standing looking directly at us and his body was covered by grass and brush. We could only see his head and a few inches of his neck. The PH said shoot him just under the chin. Pulled the shot left. Can't get that out of my mind - I really wanted a sable on this hunt. Had one other bad shot on a zebra. Just as soon as I shot I knew I pulled the shot high and to the left (complete melt down on my part - still don't know why I did it). I chambered another round and started running after him because I knew I blew the shot. As luck would have it, the bullet hit him in the neck and he went down immediately. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Going to have Jerry Huffaker do a standing shoulder mount on the giraffe. Yes, the skin on a giraffe is very thick. Hopefully we won't have any hair slippage. They field skinned the giraffe and I shot it in the morning at the coolest part of the day.

I looked up your report, man you took a great old buffalo. We stayed in Mukanga Camp and Mururu Camp and spent a little time in Pedza Pasi Camp (but didn't sleep there). All camps were great but Mukanga was my favorite. I'll post some pics of all three camps later.

I love those zebra, I have now taken 7 in total. One of my favorite rugs was destroyed a few months ago, so we needed a replacement. I was lucky to get the zebra in Dande because we saw them only once. Hard to tell from the pic but the Dande zebra have no shadow stripes. Going to make a rug from the Dande zebra. Going to make a rug and pedestal shoulder mount from the two Lemco zebra. When all that taxidermy is completed, we will have 4 rugs, one wall shoulder mount and one pedestal shoulder mount.

The only issue I saw in Zimbabwe was the fuel shortage and subsequent lack of food in the stores. The camps were all well supplied. We spent one night in Harare and drove from Dande to Harare and drove from Lemco to Bulawayo. No problems at all, never felt in danger at any time. I see no problem with hunting in Zim as long as you book with one of the large well-known outfitters.

More buffalo in Dande, same amount of elephant in Dande and Binga (Broom's concession). Neither area had much in the way of plains game (as is the case with most of the Zambezi Valley). Although they took a 57" kudu in Dande just before we arrived and we saw a 56" kudu while we were hunting buffalo. Camps in Dande and Binga were comparable. If it was buffalo I was after, I would definitely go to Dande. Dande has good genetics and chance at a 40" plus buffalo is good.

Heck Terry, I like zebras too. I've spread rugs all over our floors, my parent's floors, my sibling's floors...even the in-laws. Just like kudu... I'll always shoot another if I get the chance!

Might be a stupid question but.. How`s the license system in Zim..? Can you hunt tuskless/cow elephants if you happen to bump into them? Or was it "arranged" as well..? Great report!

You have to have them on license when you arrive. The PH will have paperwork from the proper authorities which will show what animals you have on your license. I had planned on taking tuskless and had one on my license. When I say we "bumped into them" I mean we weren't actually tracking them. We were walking to a spring to look for buffalo tracks and saw the elephants.
