Jumbo ‘buries’ border jumper under branches

Victoria Falls Reporter
July 16, 2009

A border jumper from the resort town of Victoria Falls is lucky to be alive after being savagely attacked by an elephant, which later “buried her” under branches of tree and soil before going away.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Martha Manyara confirmed the incident, which she said happened last week in Botswana near Kazungula border post.
Asst Insp Manyara said on 4 July, Miriam Nowakwe of House Number 1152 Chinotimba Township who was in the company of two other unidentified women from the resort town crossed into Botswana using an undesignated entry point.
“The three met a herd of elephants. One charged at them and attacked Miriam while her companions fled from the scene,” she said.
“After savagely attacking her, the elephant buried her under tree branches and soil and left her for dead.”
Asst Insp Manyara said as a result, she sustained a fractured left leg, bruises on her body and a deep cut in the neck.
Some Tswanas later found Miriam buried under tree branches and soil.
She said Tswanas then reported the matter to the police who attended the scene before taking her to Kasane Hospital where she is reportedly recovering.
“Our police officers then visited her in Kasane and plans are under way to repatriate her to Victoria Falls District Hospital,” she said.

Maybe we could get a few to guard our African President and bury him under some trees and soil before we are all buried under his social programs.

On the less political side, I have heard of elephant burying their dead relatives, even some elephant bones they encounter, but this is the first time I heard of them burying anything they stomped.

I have read of quite a few humans being buried by elephants. It is often cited as a sign of the great intelligence of elephants. The authors attribute the elephant's actions as a sign of shame.

On a different note. I have traveled back and forth between Bots and Zambia through the Kazungula border post. There are often elephant seen on the outskirts between Kasane and the border post. On my first trip through I left the immigration office at about 8am and being on foot had to walk several hundred yards down a dirt road to the river where a barge takes you over to the Zambian side. The road has a chain link fence on both sides and lots of thick brush. It can feel like walking down a dark alley even during the middle of the day.

I noticed some tracks in the dust at the side of the track. I tried to identify them as I walked along. About half way to the river I saw were elephants had crossed the track during the night. The fence at the side had been down for quite a while. The rest of the walk seemed very long....

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I blame Disney for attributing animal behavior to intelligence. Perhaps they could just as easily bury humans for the same reason we pick up dog crap from the yard. Who knows.
