My wife is not a hunter, but she does like to hike. Does anyone know if one can arrange a combo hunt/trek safari? The compromise would probably be something like 4 hunting days and 4 trekking days. Obviously the trekking would be in some area of beautiful scenery. Or, the hunting would be in an area where I could hunt and my wife could hike all day where the scenery makes it worthwhile. Am I asking for the impossible? The point here is: my wife wants me to go on a trek with her and I am trying to sneak in some hunting.

I suppose it would be possible. I would get a hold of Dirk De bod - http://www.safarisnamibia.com/
Dirk is an expert on the flora and fanna of Namibia and specializes in custom holidays including hunting. He will take you to the most senic areas in Namibia. He is very likable, but he is not cheap... Tell him Aaron Rust sent you... (I don't get anything for recomemding him...) I met him over a double rifle deal and then I hunted with him... he became one of my best friends in the end of living there in Namibia. It seems that anyone who gets to know him counts him as a great friend. Top notch kind of guy.

Thank you Aaron, I will follow up. I actually know someone else who lives in Wheatland! Although Wheatland may have a population of millions, I don't know.

Big Grin

The whole state of Wyoming has just barely 1 million residents.

I read just recently in either Sports Afield or African hunter about a trekking safari in Namibia. I know they exist.

Sorry I'm not much help.

There are about 4 million Kiwis also. (I have three of them working in my shop this week.)

The City of Los Angeles has more than that.

Namibia is generally speaking not a hiker-friendly place. It's arid and it gets pretty hot even in winter. However there are some hikes. see http://www.namibweb.com/hikingtrails.htm The classic hike is the Fish River Canyon but no hunting allowed. That's true on all public hiking trails to my knowledge, most of them are in national parks. Most of the hunting is on private land so your hiking is somewhat artificial. Oops, there's a fence!

You may have some luck in some of the communal areas, ie be able to hike and hunt at the same time.

I would recommend the Otter trail in RSA, along the SE coast, for hiking. You can hunt before or after in the E Cape.

I took my non-hunting wife with me to Namibia.
Reinhard Mosich of Kuduberg. Hiking trails, rock carvings, very remote. Reinhards wife is also a master hunting guide she taught my wife to shoot and took her hunting, somthing that I could not get her to do. I think that it being another woman encouraging her made the differance.

The person I know in Wheatland is Sandra Cooper, who is an environmental expert. She worked for me in Uganda for two years and I will be sending her to Southern Sudan next month. She is not intimidated at all by the conditions in Juba, a great trooper. For all I know she is anti-hunting, but I have never discussed the subject with her.

Wink,

I have always boasted that I have been in the business of arranging custom safaris for longer than most, and that I can arrange a safari to suit any requirement. Your requirements seem like offering a very real challenge: Satisfy a hiking/trekking wife on a good trek and at the same time satisfy an experienced safari hunter on the sideline. Challenge? Yes, for sure. Am I up to it? Don't know for sure, but think so!

You have obviously been on a number of safaris, so a normal plains game safari is not going to be of any particular interest to you. I can think of quite a number of basic proposals, but would rather discuss these by means of private messages.

Please send me a message at andrew@mclarensafaris.com if you wish to discuss such a proposed safari and trekking adventure.

In good hunting.

Andrew McLaren.
