A bad idea to bring up, anyway! Unless re-kindling an old battle is someone's idea of fun the day after Christmas. Wink

Do a search on 45/70 for DG and you'll see what I mean (ps: remember that the "45/70 wars" are premised on hot loads for the 45/70, which are essentially mimiced by the 450 Marlin). If you read all the threads on this topic, it'll take you a week or so to get through them. Smiler

Cheers,
Canuck

I happen to love the .450 Marlin. I have a Marlin, a BLR and a custom bolt built on a Ruger 77. I took the bolt to Namibia and took a nice Kudu with it, but I would have to think real hard about carrying it for DG in Africa. I've loaded "hot" with spitzers, etc. for the bolt, but case capacity limits what can really be done. I doubt that the minimum standards for energy could be met where they're in effect.

I'd use a 450 Marlin lever gun on buffalo, lion, and leopard.

Crocodile (I want something more precise)
Hippo and Ele I want something that will kill a Tyranasaur.

Come to think of it I can't imagine a better lion rifle.

Canuck:

I find myself a bit torn here between certainly agreeing with you about the 45-70 -but not quite sure that the 450 Marlin is only its smokeless powder heir (or for that matter, the 444 Marlin) (I have expressed my views emphatically that smokeless did not improve the 45-70) There always is something to be said for the "big, slow moving" bullet. (It builds up hydrostatic shock on thin skinned animals, at least) Since most of the real big bores (beyond the 375 H&H and even the 416, whether Rem or Rigby)move slowly, why can't the 45-70 stand in this company? In the old American West, the 45-70 failed significantly as a hunting cartridge. (American buff hunters used, at a minumum, a 45-90) It failed as a military cartridge because it had the trajectory of a garden hose. It was replaced in the US military service by the 30-40 Krag-Jorgensen - a cartridge so superior in accuracy and in killing power at long ranges as not to be worth the discussion. The constant current uproar about the 45-70 is exactly like what some body wisecracked about the 9mm pistol cartridge - " It's a cartridge whose time came and went - and came again". No body ever asks how come the 45-70 disappeared in the first place.

Gerry,

Don't get me wrong....I'm not really for or against the 45/70. I was just warning Gentleman Jack that this topic is a slippery slope, and who wants to start another scrap (however inadvertently or well-meaning) at this time of year? It's like poking a hornets nest..

If anyone is interested in the 45/70 for DG and wants to discuss it, it should be a pre-requisite to read all the archives here on the topic first. Smiler

Cheers,
Canuck
