Last week I have tried in the shooting range my rifle 375 H&H mag.
I used a box of shells buyed last year: FEDERAL CLASSIC 300 GR HI-SHOK SOFT POINT. Serial number 3 39J093.
The last one failed. Tried another time, failed again!
Very dangerous situation for a dangerous game caliber.
Please check your ammunitions if the same type dont use.

You mean failed to fire? What did the primer look like after the round was "fired".

Could possibly be the firing pin spring, and not the ammo.

Have you had the bolt apart since your last session? It may not be put back properly. You will get fail to fires from that!

The very first thing i would do it get on the phone to Federal and report the incendent. Most major ammo mfgs. keep lot no.'s in their qualtiy assurance dept. Their may be people afield and hunting as we speak with a potential bad lot. The next thing is get it checked out by a compentent gun smith who knows this brand of firearm. Hope this helps you out. It could be the gun or the ammo. A smith or knowledgeble dealer would be the first stop. If you contact Federal they will want to see the rifle and you don't want to send it to them over this.

I had one 215M primer fail to fire. I removed it from the case and it looked different in color from the others. It's very rare that a primer is defective. I am not certain what was wrong with my primer but it would not fire when hit really hard when tried again.

Appears that you fired all of them, successfully, until the last round, which didn't fire after a re-strike...correct?

I would suspect the ammo, unless your rifle coincidentally developed a problem prior to the last round being fired. Try some other ammo through it (if available) and if that fires O.K. let Federal know.

I agree with Mike and Kensco on this one. How the primer looks after a firing attempt can indicate a weak or blocked spring. Rusty makes a darn good point as well.

If those rounds will fire in someone elses gun, I would be worried about mine.

absolutely is not the gun. The percussioni is very powerful and in the centre of the primer. Also the shell failed is not the last one, I tried with other of the same box and all are perfect.
Im' sure is the ammo, probably the primer. I'have preserved the ammo box in a dry place with a good temperature. I havent open the ammo, because I want wait the reply from the factory.
I'have e.mailed the problem to the Federal representative in Italy. He said he have called directly the Federal.

Sounds like the primer.

Not your problem here, but years ago I bought a used revolver and it came with a box of Winchester factory shells as I recall. I took it out on the mesa to get used to it and the first shot stuck halfway down the barrel. I was done for the day so I drove back home, and finally managed to drive the bullet back out the way it came. It never occurred to me back then to contact the company. I just weighed each round in the box, threw out the two that weighed light, and didn't have any trouble with the rest.

I would handle it differently today.

Some years ago, I had a box of PMC 45 Colt ammo that had one round with no powder. I pulled the bullet to see what was wrong with it.

Mario,

Last year, I helped a friend regulating his rifle with Winchester fail safe 300Win.
More we shot, more the impacts scattered.
We checked the wood-barrel clearance, heath....

The cause : Counterfeited ammos, bought at a renowned seller "Decathlon". Nobody ever imagined one can counterfeit ammos.

Two weeks ago I bought three boxes of 140gr fail safe for my new .270wsm. This was the first time I had used this ammo, and it was all over the board; one of the rounds did not fit properly into the chamber, it went into the chamber fine, but when I tried to lock down the bolt, it was very stiff, so I did not attempt to fully lock down the bolt and threw the round away. This is the first, and probably last, time I have attempted to use Winchester Fail Safe. Your response does make sense, because I have never shot a premium round of that poor quality.

Fair enough. Sounds like you have rightfully zeroed in on the ammo.

Federal Hi Shock arent safari ammo. They are cheap bullets to be used for practice or plains game.

Had the same ammo fail on a hunt several years ago to Zimbabwe...My hunting partner had it blow up on the hide of an impala with no damage. When we testfired ammo, it was coming apart upon leaving barrel and was taking out tree limbs above the target. He emailed Federal and got no response. This was not the ammo with Nosler or Trophy Bonded bullets, they look suspiciously like Hornady.
