Wanted to get the opinions of those here as to the estimated costs for shipping completed trophies from SA.

Here is what is coming: 2-Blesbok shoulder mounts, 2-Springbok shoulder mounts, 2-Springbok European mounts, 2-Gemsbok shoulder mounts, 2-Kudu shoulder mounts, 1-Wildebeese shoulder mount, 1-Impala shoulder mount, 1-zebra flat skin, and backskins from all the shoulder mounts.

Here is the estimate:

Air Freight Option (473 kg):
Intl Airfreight - $1500
Departure fee - $150
Documentation fee - $100
Airline security and fuel surcharges - $200
Cartage and packing - $500
Insurance - $100
Facility fee - $125
Destination customs-brokerage fee - $500
Forwarded delivery to residence - $600
Total: $3,775

The sea option is about $1,100 cheaper.

Based on your experiences, do these costs/fees seem reasonable?

Thanks

That estimate looks about right. I just got my estimate for shipping my trophies, unmounted, for 111 kg. cost is $775 and that does not include customs clearing and ground transportation to my taxidermist.

I have nyala, impala, warthog, lioness, klipsrpinger, blue wildebeest, duiker and waterbuck being shipped. All skulls and most all of the capes.

Here was what I paid from Zim via SA last month. Note these were UNFINISHED trophies in ONE crate.

Crate Dimensions: 1 Crate x 71kgs [156lbs] = 114 volume metric; HRE/JNB/JFK

Summary of Actual Costs from Fauna & Flora:
- Breakbulk Services $80
- Freight Charges Air $784
- Carriers Certificate & Release $25
- Inland Freight $242 (NYC to PA)
- Terminal handling $25
- Customs Entry Service Fee $225
- Special Messenger Service $20
- Reforwarding Service $25
TOTAL = $1427.00

You have a few more fees bewildered, and I'd be curious where the "Cartage and packing" and "Airline security and fuel surcharges" actually go to (airlines, and is one actually your dip/pack with the outfitter???) - as the $1100 saving of ocean freight could not be totally from the savings in the shipping itself if you follow.

But based on what I paid the Airfreight itslef looks good considering the weight and the fact that you probaby have two crates (?) which increases the overall volume.

Doug,

Is it two crates? Does that include the taxidermy? If so, it is about right. I think the $500 broker fee is too much. They may be padding the bill some.

In the future you will know better!

I used the Ocean shipping scheme in 2004 with good results. I was very happy with the whole process and have just arranged for my 2005 taxidermy to be sent the same way - all through Fauna and Flora.

Sure you could probably rent a truck and go pick the crates up yourself and save on the clearing fees - but is that realistic - what is your time worth?

The Ocean shipping savings you noted -$1100 is another trophy fee [or two] on your next trip.

Bill,

I don't yet know if they were able to get everything into a single crate. These are completed mounts and the taxidermy work has been paid separately. This is just for shipping.

Also, I know what you are saying about the broker fee. It seems high to me but I don't do this every day so ...

Thanks Bill,

Doug

Les,

I hear what you are saying about chasing crates around. I expect these will go by sea to save the bucks. How long did your shipment take by boat?

Thanks again,
Doug

Doug,

Sorry to be so long. I've been out of touch for a while.

If I recall, the actual shipment took 3-4 weeks from Durban to NYC. I had SCS hold the shipment as it was completed just before the holidays and they do not want to ship anything during that period.

A few extra days on each end for domestic transit. And the local delivery company made an appointment to drop the crate off. [They tried to get more $$$ out of us at delivery to off load the crate - but that is included in the price - so a quick call to Mr. Meehan, and the cell phone in the truck rang shortly thereafter - they very promptly offloaded the shipment and drove away.] It seems like the best option for completed taxidermy at least!

**** These look to be a little "padded" so you might can do some negotiation. The overall price is just about right for what you're getting, IMO. That many shoulder mounts will take up ALOT of volume.

Has anyone had a negative experience shipping by sea?
