Stray baboon put down By Raymond Jaravaza, Chronicle Reporter A stray baboon, which “visited,†residents of Sidojiwe Hostels in the Donnington Industrial area and some parts of Belmont was put down by a professional hunter after becoming a nuisance. A resident of Sidojiwe Hostels, Mr Somuch Nkomo, said the baboon arrived at the hostels at around 4pm on Tuesday and invaded three apartments. “There was commotion everywhere and people fled from their homes as the baboon dashed into the premises possibly seeking shelter. It then climbed onto the roof of one of the hostels, where it spent the night,†he said. Yesterday morning, the baboon left Sidojiwe Hostels and went to the Belmont Industrial area, where it started roaming around a number of company premises. Business was brought to a standstill as workers and passersby jostled to catch a glimpse of the animal. When it got to Boart Longyear Company it sat on the company’s roof. “It was running around on top of the roof and passerby, were flocking into the premises to get a glimpse of the animal,†said a security guard at Boart Longyear. One of the company’s officials then phoned the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. However, the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said they did not have fuel, but summoned a professional hunter, who went and put down the animal. A National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority official said they gave permission to the hunter to shoot the animal since it was terrorising people. “We had no fuel to attend to the scene so we summoned a professional hunter to kill the baboon,†he said.
