Hunting Lord Derby eland in the CAR
Hello Everyone

My good friend PH Thierry Labat has just returned from 4 months hunting in CAR. Thierry also hunts for Roger Whittall here in Zim and has done so for the past eight years. I have accompanied a number of hunts conducted by Thierry - you may have read about some of them in posts I made a while back. In Zim, Thierry hunts everything, and in CAR he specializes in Lord Derby eland. I was awed by the eland pictures he recently showed me, and I know you will be too. The biggest taken by Thierry was 51" and his boss in CAR, Operator/PH Andre Roux of Dar El Kouti, took an unbelievable 56 incher with client Mark Watts . Apparently, the bull is definitely the SCI number 2 and a possible world record. Anyway, here are some of the trophy pictures from Thierry's 2007 hunts in CAR. If you would like to chat about hunting CAR or Zimbabwe with Thierry Labat, please contact him at tlabatsafaris@zol.co.zw

Enjoy!!

Dave

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

If you have never seen a well executed pedestal mount of a Lord Derby Eland, then you haven't seen the what I consider the greatest antelope trophy there is. jbderunz' cousin had a beautiful mount at the Rambouillet show 15 months ago. They are just superb.

A Lord Derby Eland is an amazing trophy, but you must also calculate the risks of going where they live. I just came back from CAR and I can tell you it is a war zone. It is more than just unstable. It is in economic, military and political chaos. The safety of hunters cannot be assured. In the bush much traditional Eland country is being taken over by people and farm animals. For example, here are three groups of illegals wandering around: national and international cattle herdsmen as well as home-grown and foreign rebel fighters and also displaced nomadic tribesmen who are migrating all around in the forested areas looking for a place that has not been devastated by war and genocide. You will see poachers and cattle herders in the areas you hunt. Bangui is the capital and you must travel through it. It is a horrible place for travelers. A coup D'Etat is anticipated there soon. My comment would be that if any of us decide we must go to CAR, we might want to limit the risk to ourselves alone and not vulnerable family members. Sorry for the gloomy report, but sometimes news about these places is sparse, so we all need to speak up.
