Just read an article by Jon Sundra about transporting a rifle in a takedown shotgun case. Simply remove the stock and your rifle will fit into a 34 to 36 inch takedown shottygun case. Since most rifles are glass bedded and shot before you begin hunting Sundra claims you wont have a problem. My two gun rifle case is 54 inches long and weighs way to much. Has anybody tried this???

Gunny, I have done this a number of times. No problem. I have shipped my stock in my suit case as well, action / scope in the short gun case. Best, Phil http://www.go-on-safari.com Professional Hunter - Tanzania

Gunny All of the rifles that I travel with are set up like this. I also use Talley QD scope mounts and remove scopes for shipping. A lot of time the rear of the scope extends past the rear of the receiver.I never hunt without checking rifle zero regardless of where I travel. James

I also travel exclusively (if just taking one shooter) with a take down case. when traveling with 2 I don't purely because I don't have the correct sized case for multiple take downs. As stated above I always check zero (regardless). I personally don't remove scopes, because my rifles are not set up w/QD, everything is glass bedded. I did have to rezero last winter in Mongolia, but that is the first time I have ever had to. Mike "Too lazy to work and too nervous to steal"

I've been thinking about doing this too. Do you think the triggers are protected well enough?

FWIW, I did this last year on my trip to Moz. Multiple flights, smaller plane to Moz., a bush flight, it seemed like a great idea. I had no problems w/ zero returning, just make sure you tighten the rec. screws the same when reassembling. I replaced the factory M70 screws w/ allen head ones to make ths a bit easier. Now here is the bad news. No problems w/ the setup, a takedown case in the bottom of a Cabela's large, wheeled duffle, while traveling in the US. When I get to RSA to connect to Moz. the SSA people make me take the case out & send it seperately, kind of defeats the whole idea of everything in one bag. They made me do the same for my return flight to the US even though I flew to RSA w/ everything in one bag. The other problem is weight of the entire bag, over 70#. W/O the wheels this would be quite a load to haul around. I'm thinking a TuffPak & carry on next trip, even if I only take one rifle. Either way, got to get back for a bigger buff. Once my rifle is sighted in, nobody touches it, I don't remove the scope unless I have a wounded animal to follow up, then I will sight the rifle again with scope when I re-attach it. I never take a stock off for shipment... I have seen to many screw ups with such things, so I am perhaps overly cautious about monking with my rifles, except for my iron sighted doubles of course. Glad to hear that it does work. I remove the stocks on my rifles every year after hunting in the snow and never had a zero change yet. My new 416 is a glass bedded fiberglass stock so it should go back together with no problems. I think that the cabelas under the duffle case is a thing of the past since 911. You dont want someone to think you are hiding anything. I believe that now most airlines put all the guns in one compartment anyway. That way they keep an eye on them.
